I think Jade works better on an adult than Sapphire so would choose that one.

Agree with a PP if you like gem names Ruby is lovely.

ifigoup · 05/10/2021 07:13

Sapphire/Sapphira is a biblical name so it has a long history!

BelindaCinder · 05/10/2021 07:18

jade noun (2)
Definition of jade (Entry 3 of 3)
1 : a broken-down, vicious, or worthless horse
2a : a disreputable woman
b : a flirtatious girl

Comedycook · 05/10/2021 07:20

Sapphire is a pretty sound. Jade is fine.

How about Pearl, Ruby, Opal?

BatFinksWings · 05/10/2021 08:59

Are you the regular sapphire poster? Grin

Seesawmummadaw · 05/10/2021 09:02

The Sapphire that I know gets called Saffy.
Jade is awful.

Agree with pp. Pearl is beautiful

MrsFin · 05/10/2021 09:04

@MmNc01

They both sound like porn star names, sorry.

I agree.

KirstenBlest · 05/10/2021 09:18

Not a fan of either, but of the two, Jade.
Jane is much nicer though. Sapphire is awful.

Careful, you'll get deleted!!
SugarPlum10 · 05/10/2021 09:55

Sapphire, then she has some nn options like Saffy and Fifi. I too think Jade sounds a bit dated now (sorry!)

ladycarlotta · 05/10/2021 11:48

I know a Sapphire and she's the loveliest person. I'd go with that. I think Jade is quite dated now, and so overused over the last quarter of the 20th century that it doesn't evoke the stone any more, which is a shame.

is this an eighteenth century dictionary you're using?
StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 05/10/2021 11:55

Sapphire is quite razzle-dazzle but I love Saffy for short.

I do think Jade is pretty even if it's seen as a bit naff and 90s at this point. When Bianca and Mick called their daughter Jade back in the early 70s it probably sounded so fresh and unusual.

astoundedgoat · 05/10/2021 11:57

I think Sapphire has more versatility than Jade.

Pearl and Ruby are also beautiful - I kind of wish I'd put my foot down and called my two daughters those names, but my DH rebelled against Pearl. (We ended up with equally off-piste names, if not worse!)

StormBaby · 05/10/2021 11:58

They are both stripper names. If I had to choose, it would be Sapphire

No Merrimam-Webster on line. It honestly does mean 2a to me. Maybe it’s from Regency romances.

BelindaCinder · 05/10/2021 12:05

Sorry, Merriam-Webster

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 05/10/2021 12:07

Tbh I'd much rather be a disreputable woman than be named for some of the duller virtues such as faith and patience.

RuthW · 05/10/2021 12:13

Sapphire as I love Saffi

Rainbowqueeen · 05/10/2021 12:20

Jade. Another one who automatically thinks stripper when I hear sapphire

tickledtiger · 05/10/2021 12:23

Sapphire. I’d use it as a DD name if my DH would ever agree

BelindaCinder · 05/10/2021 12:23

Yes, me too, but that’s hardly a ringing endorsement.

BatFinksWings · 05/10/2021 12:48

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor ooh will I?! Grin

manhattenrain · 05/10/2021 12:57

Jade! It's a beautiful strong sounding name I can imagine on all ages.

ColdAsMice · 05/10/2021 12:57

Love sapphire
