Harper or Nova?

We have a DD due at the end of the year and struggling a little on the name.

Harper, Nova and Harlow are my favourites but I know that Harlow gets a right dragging around these parts 😂

I like Harper and Nova

OkyDoke · 28/09/2021 12:43

Nova!

ilovemykids5 · 28/09/2021 12:43

Nova was the name I want for this baby but husband said no. We are both on the older side but his reason was why would you want to name you child after a star and not referring to the car. I thought the star connection was quite nice tbh.

Lockdownbear · 28/09/2021 12:51

Op not really a fan on any of them.

Harper - plays the harp or harps on about stuff
Nova - vauxhall or Nova Scotia
Harlow - sounds more male than female, could get shortened to Harri

Op I'd try again, if you can't decide then none of them are right for you.

shreddednips · 28/09/2021 12:54

I like Nova!

Not a fan of Harlow, sorry OP. Harper is OK but possibly not the best choice if you want something different, it's really popular where I am.

daisypond · 28/09/2021 12:55

I don’t like any, sorry. They’re all faddy and will date badly.
How about Stella or Carla?

Strokethefurrywall · 28/09/2021 13:00

Harper is great! I also like Nova but that’s because I know a Nova and she’s lovely.

I also like Harlow but I don’t live in UK so none of those names have any association for me anymore.

Harper was top of our list for DS1 if he was a girl and he was born 3 months after the Beckham’s had their Harper.

tuxedocat · 28/09/2021 13:04

@WhyDoesItAlways

Think Harper is the best if that lot but I wouldn't go with any of these if you have a surname that could also be a first name as people could end up accidentally swapping them around especially as some workplaces have lastname.firstname email addresses. Happens to someone I know, people forever thinking her surname is her first name.
I know what you mean - our surname is definitely a surname and not a name thankfully Smile

I actually think Nova is a great name, really pretty. A nova is the explosion of a new star being created! If I came across a child called Nova I wouldn't even think of types of cars. Mumsnet is really not the best place to test out your name choices.

SirChenjins · 28/09/2021 13:11

Nova - cheap car from Vauxhall
Harlow - Essex town
Harper - was nice until the Beckhams ruined it

It you want to be unique go for something truly different and really embrace it - Carol, Pauline, Alison, Nicola, Lorraine, that type of name. No-one calls their DDs those names any more.

Thank you, that was my thought too, and lesson learnt from me don’t worry 🤪😂

Nova is lovely. I only know one - who is actually a boy, I don’t think his mum realised it’s usually a girl’s name. I’m surprised it’s not more popular - or I was, having just found out people associate it with the car 😄
Harper is ok.
Harlow not so great I think - there’s something too random and try hard about that.

VoyageInTheDark · 28/09/2021 13:21

I like Harper and Harlow, they were both on my list.

ducksalive · 28/09/2021 13:21

They are all modern American names which aren't my favorite style.
I think Nova despite the car is the prettiest of them.

Other options are Piper, Avery, Madison, Riley, Aria, Addison, Savanah and Stella.

ColdAsMice · 28/09/2021 13:25

Hmmm how about...
Sorrel
Etta
Lyra

I like Harper, but it's 100% Beckham now

bloominglovelyorange · 28/09/2021 14:30

I love Harper

FindingMeno · 28/09/2021 14:34

Nova is lovely.

Blubells · 28/09/2021 14:40

Harper

Originally a last name meaning someone who plays the harp.

Mymapuddlington · 28/09/2021 14:42

Why is nova so popular all of sudden? Only ever known it as a car and now I know 3 baby novas.

Harper is my favourite

I like Nova.

The others get a big No from me.

HelebethH · 28/09/2021 14:48

I am a child of the fifties and I remember the Vauxhall Nova very well. Do not think about a car with the name but a Supernova.

ILoveShula · 28/09/2021 14:54

Harper - Harpie
Nova - small hatchback from the mid 1980s
Harlow - not the finest town in Essex. Spell it like Margot for extra meaning

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 28/09/2021 14:55

None of these sorry!
