Thoughts on Miriam?

I like it but is it a bit wet?

Beautiful name with a beautiful background - I love it and a version of it is on my shortlist.

BubbleCoffee · 16/09/2021 08:51

I like it.

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 16/09/2021 10:22

I like the name Miriam. I don't think it's that common which is nice.

It's a name I've grown up with; my first neighbour was called Miriam. My mam and dad also have a friend from the club called Miriam...Turns out club Miriam and neighbour Miriam are mother and daughter haha. We moved from neighbour Miriam when I was 5.

Not wet at all. Quite sensible and traditional to me.

If you want to be really wet have the nickname Mimi.

But Miriam on its own is good.

Super strong name. Moses's sister and fellow prophet, and another name for the Virgin Mary - not that I’m saying you have to be religious or that it instantly screams "religious", but can you name two stronger females?? (I mean, maybe you can, but they are two pretty powerful women)

CoronaPeroni · 16/09/2021 10:39

My mum's name and great-aunt's name. Lovely ❤️

Love this! I don't think I can name two cooler or stronger women.

I think I always felt the name Miriam was wet due to knowing a rather wet Miriam growing up. She was just VERY wet, bless her, and so to me the name always seemed wet by association. But I am glad that's just a personal link (and one I'm sure I could get over, having not seen this Miriam since I was around 9 years old!)

I also like nickname Miri. Mimi is cute too though.

Lovely

SE13Mummy · 16/09/2021 15:12

I know/know of a couple aged 18 and under. One goes by Miri, the other is a Mim. I also know a couple of adults named Miriam. One of them is in the military and she's the Miriam I knew first so I definitely don't think of it as a 'wet' name. In fact, I think it's an underused name, love that it doesn't have the vowel start and end that's so popular at the moment e.g. Ava, Evie etc. and that it has a solid ending (instead of an ee or uh).

SirChenjins · 16/09/2021 15:13

Love it 😊

CaitlinEJ · 16/09/2021 16:02

Unfortunately the one is know is a really horrible person, but if I didn’t know her I’d probably think it’s beautiful.

EishetChayil · 17/09/2021 01:58

Gorgeous.

If we have a DD2 she will be Miriam.

FizzyDibdab · 17/09/2021 04:33

Love it and the other similar names: Marianne, Marion and Maryam.

CorvusPurpureus · 17/09/2021 07:22

I live in the ME, & it's super popular here (Mariam even more so - I don't think I've got a single class that doesn't have a Myriam/Maryam/Mariam/Miriam in it, often 2 or 3!).

So if you ever consider emigrating to anywhere hot & sandy, be aware that she'll instantly go from having a cool, unusual name to having the popularity equivalent of Olivia or Emily...Wink

I think it's a fantastic name. Agree the associations & the -am ending make it strong. I'd definitely go for it.

reprehensibleme · 17/09/2021 07:31

Lovely name. Feminine but not twee/fussy. Uncommon but not 'out there'. No pronunciation issues. Lots of good nicknames (know a Miriam who goes by 'Mivvi' which always reminds me of ice cream - she's pretty cool so that works Grin.

Amdone123 · 17/09/2021 07:38

I love it, too. It's beautiful. I taught a Maryam ( she was from Bahrain). I think of her ; she was so lovely.
I understand people saying it's old fashioned. But it's a classic for me. It's far lovelier than some of the other old fashioned names floating around.

daisypond · 17/09/2021 07:41

I like it, but I might assume you were Jewish - the ones I know are. Similarly with Mariam - I’d assume you were Muslim, as the ones I know are.

OverTheWater · 17/09/2021 07:46

Love it. As above, such a strong name with a lot of history. Mary to me is "wetter" than Miriam. I too would wonder about Jewish heritage although it has a long history of Christian use.

Difficult to make it work with an M surname though - you'd have to be Miriam Margoles to pull it off.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 17/09/2021 07:49

Love it. It was on my list, but DH ditched it.

Comedycook · 17/09/2021 07:51

Really dislike it...reminds me of a really frumpy friend my mum had when I was a kid

peaceinourtime · 17/09/2021 15:31

Miriam is a nice name.

Cindie943811A · 17/09/2021 21:59

A charming name

wizzler · 17/09/2021 22:31

Beautiful classic name

GroggyLegs · 17/09/2021 22:34

Unlikely to be found on a pen or keyring in national trust gift shop.

Depends whether this is an issue you are prepared to tackle with five year old Miriam.
