Can we call our baby...

Maxwell????

My husband and I love the name Max but we have a one syllable surname and think Maxwell sounds better with our surname. I'm not keen on Maximus or Maximilian. What are your thoughts on Maxwell?

Other contenders are Leo and Jude (although one syllable, Jude works very well with surname) but I'm worried they're too popular.

Middle name would be Alexander.

Are you worried about the Robert/Ghislaine connection?

I think you can use Maxwell yes. Although be prepared for the fact that most will just call him Max anyway.

LakeShoreD · 13/09/2021 21:02

A couple of years ago I would have said yes, it’s a lovely name, now I just think (alleged) sex trafficker Ghislaine. Sorry. Honestly there’s nothing wrong with just Max, even with a short surname, it’s a fantastic name. Leo and Jude and great too though.

17caterpillars1mouse · 13/09/2021 21:03

Maxwell is lovely and I imagine rarely used. I actually prefer Maxwell to Max. I like Maximillian too though

I like Jude as a nn but do find it a bit faddy as a first name. Leo is nice but soooo popular in my area. They are everywhere

SausageRoll2020 · 13/09/2021 21:05

Of course you can, it's an awesome name!

Wole · 13/09/2021 21:06

Yes if you like it.

I always think of coffee.

Blueroses99 · 13/09/2021 21:06

I like Maxwell and my first thought was coffee (a very dated reference Blush) not the Maxwell family.

Maxwell Alexander sounds much better than Max Alexander.

If you're worried about Jude and Leo being popular then I feel I should say I only know 3 boys born in 2020 and they were all called Max!

I agree Maxwell is the best out the 3 though

RickOShay · 13/09/2021 21:10

I like Maxim.

Palavah · 13/09/2021 21:11

what about Maxim?

Suzi888 · 13/09/2021 21:13

@Palavah

what about Maxim?
Like the magazine Confused I just think Maxwell House…. Prefer just Max.
Redyellowpink · 13/09/2021 21:17

Beatles fan?

TatianaBis · 13/09/2021 21:17

I just think of the ghastly Maxwell and Makosi from BB and the Maxwell House ads. It also used to be a brand of tapes. (I’m quite old clearly).

I think Alexander is infinitely nicer than any forms of Max. So I’d do Alexander Max.

NameChangeinHaste · 13/09/2021 21:20

I keep thinking about silver hammers!

lemonsyellow · 13/09/2021 21:23

Maxwell is a faddy new name. Leo and Jude are both much better.

YlangYlangYlangYlang · 13/09/2021 21:27

@TatianaBis weren't the tapes Maxell?

lgfh07 · 13/09/2021 21:30

All very helpful points thank you! I think Maximilian is more popular and has less associations? But I'm not sure I'm keen. Our other option is Sebastian but my husband will need convincing.

Love Maxwell. Go for it!

10ColaBottles · 13/09/2021 21:32

Reminds me of Adrian Mole.

GoodnightGrandma · 13/09/2021 21:32

I like Jude the most.

loobylou44 · 13/09/2021 21:34

I know a Maxwell who is 15 now. I've always loved the name.

LouNatics · 13/09/2021 21:35

Maxwell doesn’t seem like a ‘faddy new name’ to me, I went to school with two and I am 40.

Of course you can use Maxwell, possibly due to the above it’s my default longer name guess for a male Max.

WeDidntMeanToGoToSea · 13/09/2021 21:37

Maxwell's awful. Sorry. You did ask Blush

I don't think there's anything wrong, as a name, with (say) Max Jones, but I do think Max Alexander is a bit heavy on the x-es. How about Alexander as a first name?

Babydust13 · 13/09/2021 21:38

I love it Maxwell is awesome

TatianaBis · 13/09/2021 22:11

Oh yes you’re right - long time ago.
