Opinions on baby names :)

Hello,

DH and I just started trying for DC1 and so baby names is a popular discussion atm!

We are first of any of 'our generation' to have kids in both our extended families and friends, so would appreciate some input from people who know current kids names and what is around in classrooms etc (we and family are about 25 years out of date!).

We don't want anything too popular, thinking classic names due a revival/having a low level one already. Nickname options are a plus, as I never had any for my short name, and always wanted them!

Any comments (kind please) or new suggestions welcome, thank you!

Our current top choices are:
Boy

  • Percival
  • Alistair
  • Nicholas

Girl

  • Lucinda
  • Rosalie
  • Sylvia
Smile

Nicholas and Rosalie are lovely X

Aurorie11 · 11/09/2021 21:22

Love Alistair def not Percival
Rosalie of your girl names

Zarene · 11/09/2021 21:25

All of them are lovely, except Percival which is dire (sorry).

bluetang7 · 11/09/2021 21:53

Thank you for your comments!

I did wonder about Percival, so good to get feedback!

It's on the list as it goes very well with our surname (think Leslie, Salmon, Alice for kind of syllables/sound).

I'm probably overthinking this as haven't done it before! So much pressure choosing a new person's name! Shock

I detest Percival, but the rest are all really lovely.

@DramaAlpaca

I detest Percival, but the rest are all really lovely.
Thank you Smile This has definitely decided against Percival then haha Grin

Glad to hear lovely comments about the other names - I didn't have a favourite as we are just starting out, so really helpful Smile

All are nice except Percival 🙈 that’s just ridiculous

Aquamarine1029 · 11/09/2021 23:20

Percival is horrible.

AdaColeman · 11/09/2021 23:22

All lovely names, my favourites are Nicholas and Lucinda.

NannyR · 11/09/2021 23:26

Nicholas and Rosalie are my favourites from your list, although I much prefer Rosalind to Rosalie.

bluetang7 · 11/09/2021 23:40

Thank you everyone Smile

Sorry I can't reply to individual comments, I haven't figured out how to do that yet!

Really appreciate all the feedback, and so happy that there is support for many of these names - sounds like there are a top two for each we can keep to see what works best with middles (and when we meet DC Wink)

I really like Sylvia, but like another poster, I think I prefer Sylvie.

Nicholas is my favourite from the boys list

Rainbowqueeen · 12/09/2021 07:15

Glad to see you’ve decided against Percival 🙏

I like all your other names. Just something to think about - they all have shorter versions/nicknames. Are you happy with those??

And the general MN advice is not to tell your family and friends your chosen name until baby arrives as someone will always dislike it. But once baby is here they tend to keep those thoughts to themselves. If you tell them beforehand be prepared for brutal honesty!!

Wole · 12/09/2021 07:46

Lovely names. (Not Percival but if you were brave Percy might just work!)

I love Lucinda and Sylvia not as keen on Rosalie. Do you like Lucille? That's one of my faves at the moment.

Do not tell anyone else you know IRL the names They will all want input!

pilates · 12/09/2021 08:02

Nicholas and Rosalie ❤️
Definitely not Percival, awful

Chunkymenrock · 12/09/2021 08:07

I like your choices apart from Sylvia. It's a geriatric, frumpy name to me.

bluetang7 · 12/09/2021 10:45

The point about not telling family is a good one - conversations are light and in good fun atm, but various relatives have already 'suggested' their own names Blush

Which is lovely, except there are only so many names a Baby can have!

Thank you for pointing this out - I've now had a look at more of these where people have told IRL and had negative reactions, which would be hard. Confused

Generally, Percival seems to be the biggest hard no Smile My family are quite brutally honest so if that's the reaction here O can imagine they would react similarly IRL!

I like Lucille and Rosalind too - great suggestions - they are definitely my style (especially Rosalind, as I like three syllables with our surname).

Nn are all good with me - I don't mind what they end up being, and am happy for family to use one, and friends to use another if DC wants. I think the choice element is what I like about them! Smile

I also considered Sullivan for boys, but wasn't too sure if the Monsters Inc connection was too strong and they might be bullied for it.

I like them all except Percival. Underused classics, everyone's heard of them but there aren't loads around. Alistair and Rosalie are my favourites. You might also like Patrick, Francis, Edmund, Laurence and Peter and Rosemary, Juliet, Rosanna, Susanna/h and Louisa.

Darkgreener is a good website for checking popularity of names - type in a name and it shows you the ranking in England and Wales from 1996 - 2019 (2020 stats due out later this autumn). names.darkgreener.com/#rosalie

You can download tables of every name used 3 or more times from the ONS website.

I use this for the top 1000 in E&W: www.britishbabynames.com/blog/top-1000-names-in-england-and-wales-2019.html

(They also have the top 1000 for Scotland and top 500 for Northern Ireland).

bluetang7 · 12/09/2021 15:10

@CaffiSaliMali thank you so much! These are some great resources, I am sure I will spend a lot of time looking over these Grin

I love Laurence, Francis and Louisa!

  • Percival - awful
  • Alistair - nice
  • Nicholas - ok, bit dull

Suggestions - Patrick, Aidan, Arlo, Alexander, Nathan

  • Lucinda - not keen, but Lucy is lovely - Lucille?
  • Rosalie - nice but prefer Rosa or Rose
  • Sylvia - love

Suggestions - Imogen, Leila, Lyra, Lara, Rowan, Felicity, Phoebe, Serena, Celeste, Seren

Himawarigirl · 13/09/2021 18:29

All are nice except Percival. Even if you mainly use a nickname, you will often use the full name. Can you imagine yourself calling ‘Percival’ across a playground??
