We are due our second daughter in November, we already have a Mabel and thinking Esther form this one. I’ve been through so many names and none seem to be right!

What are people thoughts on Esther?! And does it sound okay with Mabel?!

Other names I liked but I can’t have were: Edith, Ada and Elsie!

@Givemethatknife sorry to shock you that a name used a lot by the Jewish community could make people assume that an Esther could be Jewish. Even if it is becoming more popular nowadays.

You need to get out more.

Esther and Mabel sound really nice together!

manhattenrain · 05/09/2021 09:49

Esther is fine regardless of religion. If you were to use Hadassah, then that would be a different story.

The family I know with an Aster are Ethiopian/Australian - so the timeless name that crosses cultures fits their brief - easily understood and appreciated by her Aussie non-denom but Christian heritage family and his Ethiopian traditional Christian family. They have three girls, all with similar classic, old-style names - think Sarah, Naomi, Lucy, Hester, hazel, maybe a Jessica etc, as others have said.

If I had my time for naming babies again (and had girls Wink), they'd totally be the kind of names I was considering

Prefer Estella. I find Esther a bit harsh.

Beautiful name. Absolutely love the name Esther

Rugratree · 06/09/2021 11:20

Congratulations on your baby girl! I think the name Esther is beautiful..strong but sweet sounding to me. I think it goes perfectly with Mabel (another beautiful name) well done mum xx

Rugratree · 06/09/2021 11:24

I also really like Edith and Ada..not so much Elsie (find it overly sweet and babyish)

I feel that I am very much on your wave length with girls name..however my husband is most definetly not!

littlelots123 · 06/09/2021 11:36

Thank you everyone, the name seems to be getting a lot of positive feedback!

@Rugratree I love Ada and Edith but friends of ours have recently used them, so it doesn’t feel right for us.

Other girls names that I like but couldn’t use are … Esme, Rose or Rosa, Etta and Hattie.

I’m not actually sure how to pronounce it Blush

Is it Es-ter
Rather than Es-ther?

OhWhatsTheDifference · 06/09/2021 11:49

Es-ter

SheWoreYellow · 06/09/2021 11:53

@OhWhatsTheDifference

Es-ter
Cheers.

In which case I quite like it.

I like Esther! I taught an Esther a few years back, and she was a lovely kid. Full of personality.

There is an Esther in the Bible as well, and she was pretty kick-ass for the era.

Rozziie · 06/09/2021 17:24

90s kid like me might also remember the lead singer from the girl band Eternal, spelled 'Easther' but pronounced 'Esther'. Always thought she was very pretty!

littlelots123 · 06/09/2021 17:34

@Rozziie - I’m a 90s kids too, but totally forgot about Eternal 🤣

Not sure how you’ll take this, but we have a beautiful Field Spaniel called Mabel. She gave birth to a girl puppy last Monday and we have just decided (last night) to call her Esther, which is the name we would have used if we had had a daughter. Smile

littlelots123 · 20/09/2021 13:45

@JuniorOeuf Haha, I dont take offence! They are beautiful names! We still haven’t 100% committed to Esther yet, but it is on the top of our list! As we can’t think of any other names we like.

Now for a middle name 🤣
