Valentina?

Our baby girl is 8 days old now and we are still undecided on her name! DH is Italian and we have a long Italian surname, DS1 has an Italian first name so ideally we wanted DD to have an Italian name too, but short Italian girls names seem to be in short supply!

We are 80% there with Valentina Rose but just not sure if Valentina is just too OTT for a first name in the UK? V/ Vallie/ Varley for a nickname.

Our other options are Rose Valentina or I like Vivienne Rose, or Viviana but DH isn’t sure.

Any feedback/ suggestions would be welcome!

Love Valentina it is such a pretty name. Given your Italian heritage and surname i think it is totally suitable to use. I too wouldn't bother with any nicknames although I quite like the sound of Valeh (val-eh).

Givemethatknife · 02/09/2021 21:46

It’s fine - very pretty

Balonzette · 03/09/2021 05:22

Valentina is nice but all the shortenings are horrible.

I'd choose Rose Valentina for sure.

Balonzette · 03/09/2021 05:23

Or ideally, Rosa Valentina

lovethisjourneyforme · 03/09/2021 05:50

Love it, I do immediately think of Valentino Rossi though but that's not a bad thing.

TakeMe2Insanity · 03/09/2021 06:42

Valentina is beautiful. Just always call her Valentina. It’s perfectly do able to go through life with a longish first name and not have a nick name.

manhattenrain · 03/09/2021 06:52

Valentina is beautiful. Not a fan of Vivienne or Viviana.

Lulu1919 · 03/09/2021 07:01

Like ..but would not like it to shortened to Tina !

LaBellina · 03/09/2021 07:03

I absolutely LOVE Valentina.
It was my name of choice at first if DS had been a girl but I probably wouldn’t have used it because a good ‘friend’ convinced me at that time it was OTT and she even said it was chavvy. If I ever have another baby and it’s a girl I definitely intend to name her Valentina though. It’s gorgeous and you made an excellent choice.

I'm fairly new to the name Valentina, I know someone with that name and at first I kept on thinking she was Valencia. While that's also a name option, I think Valentina is nice.

BeenAroundTheWorldAndIII · 03/09/2021 08:56

Love the name, very pretty. Hate the nicknames personally. Maybe call her by her name and see if any nn's develop naturally over time. My daughter seemed to pick her own nn when she started talking, which is actually from her middle name. But that's how she refers to herself and for now it's stuck. It may change again as she gets older.

allofthecheese · 03/09/2021 09:00

It's really lovely. I also know someone called Valencia which is really nice too.

Onthetrain75 · 03/09/2021 09:01

My daughter has Valentina as a middle name. If I’m honest I was worried that if it was her first name she might get called Val or Tina, which I didn’t like. We also have unusual surname. In hindsight I think it would have been fine. Given your husband is Italian I would go for it. Valentina Rose is beautiful.

Hersetta427 · 03/09/2021 09:05

I like it.

My friends who are married to Italians named their daughters Sofia and Rafaella.

Geamhradh · 03/09/2021 09:49

It's lovely. As your husband will have told you, it would be shortened (as pp has said) to Vale (with the e pronounced) in Italian if shortened at all.

RussianSpy101 · 03/09/2021 09:51

I love it, one of my favourite names. I was also going to use Rose as a middle name.
NN valley

It's also a perfume

MrsLCSofLichfield · 03/09/2021 14:51

I was hoping for a thread about the amazing Valentina Shevchenko...

ANYWAY, yes it is a beautiful name. Congratulations on your baby girl, OP Flowers

Tish008 · 03/09/2021 14:59

It's a beautiful name, I know a few Valentinas.

What about Adriana as a name, could be shortened to Ria which is bit nicer than Val?

Jericha · 03/09/2021 15:48

Love it, it was in our top two if we had a girl.

NoddingTulip · 03/09/2021 16:00

Valentina is a beautiful name, dd 1 had a room mate at uni who was known as Leni(prn Lenny)

SpanielV · 03/09/2021 18:07

Thanks so much for all everyone’s feedback, great to hear so much positivity for Valentina!

We do love the name Rosa too but it’s MIL’s name, I think I’d like her to have her own little name ideally Smile

I love Valentina! Smile

Elisemum · 03/09/2021 18:23

Valentina Rose is gorgeous. If your husband is Italian he will prob call her Vale as you know. Both Vale and Val are cool too.

TurquoiseDress · 03/09/2021 19:11

I LOVE the name Valentina!

And I wouldn't shorten it either

If others call her Val or Tina then they need to be told that the name is Valentina!!
