If you heard the name what would your first thought be on spelling? (Really don't like isobel spelling).

Isabelle X (although prefer the spelling Isobel and Isabella) X

Seawo · 30/08/2021 02:10

Isabelle - Have one in the wider family and I love the name. The other spellings always seem to look wrong/stunted to me personally (no offence meant!)

Also a bit weird about the French spelling but you’d use the Spanish one 😂

elp30 · 30/08/2021 02:18

Isabel is used in Spanish and Spanish-speaking nations.

Isabela is also used-for example, Isabela I of Castile and Aragon.

Kanaloa · 30/08/2021 02:21

My first thought would be Isabelle as I’ve never met one spelled any other way so would presume it was spelled like this. Lovely name.

MrsClatterbuck · 30/08/2021 02:34

I have also seen Isabella. Some people use the nn Issy or Izzy

Gemma2019 · 30/08/2021 03:30

After reading this thread I think I would choose Isabella instead as there's only one way to spell it. It looks like you would be forever correcting the spelling of Isabelle.

LimeRedBanana · 30/08/2021 04:47

Isobel - Scottish / Anglo
Isabel - Spanish
Isabelle - French
Isabella - Italian

Isobelle - made up, mish mash.

LimeRedBanana · 30/08/2021 04:48

And no matter which one you choose, you will have to spell it for people every time (speaking from many years’ experience).

MattyGroves · 30/08/2021 06:53

I had in my mind that Isabella was the Spanish because of Ferdinand and Isabella but I can see that Isabel also linked.

LaBellina · 30/08/2021 06:55

Isobel or Isabelle. Not Isabel.

Elisemum · 30/08/2021 07:03

I’d spell it Isabelle- absolutely gorgeous name and was always on my list IF I had a girl :)

lightnesspixie · 30/08/2021 07:08

Isobel?

Greenmarmalade · 30/08/2021 07:18

Isabel

desperate4spring · 30/08/2021 07:37

My first thought would be " Urgh, now I have to find out how to spell it and then I have to remember which spelling it is for next time".

cafenoirbiscuit · 30/08/2021 07:46

Isobel is one of the twins at St Clare’s 😁

LimeRedBanana · 30/08/2021 07:49

@cafenoirbiscuit

Isobel is one of the twins at St Clare’s 😁
They’re Pat and Isabel.
Frazzled2207 · 30/08/2021 07:49

Isabel or Isobel
-elle is unnecessarily frilly, unless you’re French, IMO

AuntieStella · 30/08/2021 07:50

@LimeRedBanana

Isobel - Scottish / Anglo Isabel - Spanish Isabelle - French Isabella - Italian

Isobelle - made up, mish mash.

And add Izabela - the Polish version
Frazzled2207 · 30/08/2021 07:51

Err yes this. Would put me off tbh. See also Catherine/Kathryn/Katherine etc for those in their 40s
Rayna37 · 30/08/2021 07:51

Much prefer Isobel but have to concede silly frilly Isabelle is more common now in the UK in the under 10s.

TableSetting · 30/08/2021 07:51

Prefer Isabel - I agree that Isabelle is too frilly

Frazzled2207 · 30/08/2021 07:52

@LimeRedBanana

Isobel - Scottish / Anglo Isabel - Spanish Isabelle - French Isabella - Italian

Isobelle - made up, mish mash.

I know a Isobella too
toadstool32 · 30/08/2021 08:56

Ahh isn't there just an English one?! Isabelle is my go to I think

ItsSunnyOutside · 30/08/2021 09:24

I much prefer Isabelle. It just looks and sounds nicer imo.

Isobel & Isabel look abit strange and 'unfinished' to me. Especially Isobel.
{Although I know they are real spellings}

ShuddaBeenMe · 30/08/2021 09:28

Isabelle. I don't like Isabel, it looks incomplete!
