French boy names/ boy names that work on French

Please help us name our baby boy who is currently nameless at a few weeks old!

We have French heritage but live in the UK. We would like names that work in French but aren't super French iyswim. For example, we like Thibault but it seems very French for a child who is likely to live in the UK for good.

Otherwise our top names are Felix and Caspar (not Gaspard). We like them but they seem a little trendy (esp caspar, plus cass sounds like the word 'to break' in French).

So please help us with any suggestions you have! Thanks!

Sebastien
Arthur
George(s)
Hugo
Luc
Pascal
Gabriel
Louis
Noah

There are some pronunciation differences between the two languages for some of these but they are all very recognisable to speakers of either language.

Just like the UK, in France a lot of older names are currently back in fashion.

Felix is a great name, but I'm also starting to see:
Armand
Léopold
Gabriel
Lucien
Alban
Gustave
Jules
Mayeul
Sacha
Amaury

Also, I wouldn't worry about "Cass" - i know quite a few girls called Cassandre/Cassandra and it doesn't seem to be a problem.

timeisnotaline · 28/08/2021 12:49

Those are all French boys/men I know. I’m not French.

I love Thibault!

Thierry? Most people know how to pronounce it due to the handsome M Henry

Raphael
Rémy
Maxime
Gabriel
Adrien
Emanuel

We’re a French/English family and we know quite a few more. A few of the boys I know are:
Felix
Hugo
Louis
Max
Gaspard (here this all the time outside the bilingual nursery, it’s clearly very popular even in London)
Leopold
Olivier
Sebastian
Nathan
Arthur

Dual Fr/UK household here. We have:

Hugo, Sebastien (often misspelt), Raphael, Xavier, Louis, Christophe.

Twilightstarbright · 28/08/2021 12:58

That’s between us and nephews. I don’t have that many sons!

Derrymum123 · 28/08/2021 13:01

Etienne, Jean-Michel, Jean, Fabien, Pierre, Jaques.

alittleconversation · 28/08/2021 14:28

Thanks all! I really like Sebastian but it's a but popular for me (mainly since DC1 has quite an little used name) and really like Raphael and Xavier but DH doesn't sadly. Some of the others are family names and there ate a few I'm not keen on for no good reason (like Louis).

I like Noe and Teo, but they wouldn't be pronounced nicely in English. I like Ludo, but not sure it would be a great stand alone name (plus DC1 has a name that ends in o).

How about just Bastien if you like Sebastian?

Tinselandlights · 28/08/2021 18:24

The French England-dwelling boys I know are:

Franck
Jean (not a boy - grown up!)
Nico
My nephew is Felix - easy to pronounce and nice!

I've also liked Ludo for a while and it's unusual without being weird.

Guineapigbridge · 28/08/2021 18:25

Bastien is cool!

SwedishEdith · 28/08/2021 18:34

Leon
Julian
Sylvain
Etienne

There are so many well-known French footballers that lots of French male names are pretty familiar and pronunciation isn't so much of an issue any more.

I always wanted a Jean-Baptiste.
