I am looking for a unique version of Pari and I came across the name Parihan for a baby girl, wondering what everyone’s thoughts are? :)

Pronounced parry (like Harry) and Han (like than)?

Babygirl21 · 27/08/2021 18:36

@CovidDoesNotExistDuh Kind of but more like Pari as in Hurry and Han as in Barn = Pareeeharn.

Not heard of Parihan, but Perihan is beautiful and means fairy queen.

NiceGerbil · 27/08/2021 18:40

Never heard it before but like it.

You're Turkish or family etc? I mean you or your OH obv!

Babygirl21 · 27/08/2021 18:40

@dancealittleclosertome It’s the same pronunciation I think but I’ve seen it with an A instead of an E, Perihan is nice too! I like them both. I wonder why there are two different spellings, interesting..

Thought worth checking!

It's lovely :)

TheWayTheLightFalls · 27/08/2021 18:58

I don’t know the name. On sight I assumed it was masculine, no idea why. I think it’s fine on reflection - presumably she’ll get “Perry” a lot as a nn?

Never heard of it before but I think it's lovely.

I wonder is the Parihan/Perihan thing like Katherine/Catherine or Stephen/Steven?

I slightly prefer Perihan but I think that is because I think peri makes a nice nn.

Both versions sound nice and it has a pretty meaning.

WaitinginVain · 27/08/2021 19:46

It's very pretty OP.

SionnachRua · 27/08/2021 19:57

In case y'all are wondering about the mass deletions, I asked MN to delete my post too if they deleted the post I quoted. Looks like they went for it!

Anyway, I think I'd lean to Perihan too personally. Although both are nice.

Sounds like a boys name to me.

Velvetscrunchy · 28/08/2021 05:42

Lovely name. Would the nickname be Pari (fairy)? I have a similar sounding name and let me tell you, the English accent makes it hard for people to make that “-ar” sound correctly. They pronounce it as either a hard A or as an e sound.

I’d suggest spelling it in a way where people pronounce it as correctly as they can or she’ll spend her life correcting people on the pronunciation. Maybe Peariharn?

IHateCoronavirus · 28/08/2021 06:19

Hi op I’ve lived in Turkey for many years and DH is Turk. I’ve not heard of Parihan but Perihan is lovely, both is sound and meaning.

GemmaRuby · 28/08/2021 06:32

My concern would be that it will be mispronounced Perry-Han/ Parry-Han most of the time.

From your description it sounds like the pronunciation should be purry-haan? I don’t think most people in the UK will be able to get that from the spelling.

Of course if you love the name it shouldn’t stop you, and you can always correct pronunciation, just bear in mind that you and then DD will have to do it constantly.

PearlyBird · 28/08/2021 06:55

not at all averse to foreign names, but this one looks unworkable written down in an English speaking country. Is it pronounced a bit like Pariah? piranha!

IHateCoronavirus · 28/08/2021 07:09

Perihan is pronounced Perry-Han

amylou8 · 28/08/2021 07:24

I read piranha then I read pariah. Nice name but they will spend their entire life spelling and pronouncing it.

Babygirl21 · 30/08/2021 00:30

Thank you everyone for all your comments! :) I’m still not sure about it at the moment and I’m looking at similar alternatives just in case.
