Lorna?

Thoughts on Lorna? It's just popped into my head. I liked reading Lorna Doone. But baby will have an auntie she'll see fairly regularly called Laura - too similar do you think?

@lottiegarbanzo

Maybe it depends where in the country you are? Is it more well-used in Scotland? Would it go with Catriona, Fiona there, in terms of vintage?

I've only ever met one adult Lorna.

What is similar to Laura is Lauren. That's basically the1990s-2010s version of Laura.

Very definitely there with Catriona and Fiona in terms of vintage

Thanks all Smile I think it's really interesting which names different people find dated. Lorna and Esther (see other thread) seem really underused and therefore quite fresh to me I don't know anyone with these names. Whereas some of the names having a bit of a revival like Jessica, Amber, Chloe, Hannah, seem much more dated to me, probably because I went to school with lots of them!

I don't like Lorna
Sounds like mourn/ mourner

I like Laurel though

Bamboozles · 20/08/2021 21:23

Love the name Lorna, "Lorna Doone" conjures up good vibes, unusual but not dated or weird

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 20/08/2021 21:24

I only know one Lorna who was in the same class as my dd and she was an awful bully, really bitchy so that puts me off tbh.

Scarby9 · 20/08/2021 21:26

My aunt is Lorna, named after Lorna Doone, and born in 1933.
I don't know any younger Lornas, and I don't know why. It's a pretty name.

JulesCobb · 20/08/2021 21:30

Love it

Lerram · 20/08/2021 22:20

I know three, all in their 50s. I don't think it sounds dated though.

The writer Lorna Moon was very glamorous.

DramaAlpaca · 20/08/2021 23:25

Love it.

manhattenrain · 20/08/2021 23:26

Whilst I'm not really a fan, it's still a nice enough name. I don't think Laura and Lorna will be a problem!

PricklesTheHedgehog · 20/08/2021 23:54

Love Lorna

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/08/2021 00:01

Beautiful - I love Lorna Doone and think it's a really romantic/poetic feeling name (like Lara and Tess). The Laura/Lorna thing could cause confusion in the same close family though... although they are different generations - maybe ask Laura and see what she thinks?

Luckingfovely · 21/08/2021 00:01

I love Esther, but really can't bear Lorna - I find it very depressing. Sorry.

As I often say though, if you love the name, the child will grow into it.

It's much better asking here though, than the endless threads where expectant parents have told family the name and are upset when they hate it!

Mumzoo5070 · 21/08/2021 00:13

I'm a Lorna. Age 50, Scottish, fitting all the stereotypes so far! I now live in England and yes do get called Laura often. Also people spell my name Launa but I blame that advert for Launa Windows.

RuthW · 21/08/2021 07:55

Awful name. I've always thought that.

Thissucksmonkeynuts · 21/08/2021 08:15

It was vetoed in this house, but I love it because I have a local connection to Lorna Doon. And now I've met dd, it wouldn't have suited her at all.

TatianaBis · 21/08/2021 10:32

I’ve always thought it was a rather dull and depressing name. Is because of forlorn? I don’t know.

lottiegarbanzo · 21/08/2021 10:35

I think of it as quite romantic. I imagine Lorna having long hair and striding over some moorland, near the coast. Sometimes with her friend Bess (the landlord's black-eyed daughter).

TatianaBis · 21/08/2021 10:37

I the full name Lorna Doone is romantic as it’s a romantic book - if excruciatingly written. But Lorna Stubbs or Lorna Green - is just depressing.

AfterSchoolWorry · 21/08/2021 10:41

Lorna not good.

Seahawk80 · 21/08/2021 10:45

I love it - and it is unusual but obviously a name. I'd much rather be called Lorna than one of the "old lady names" that are super popular now like Ivy.

lottiegarbanzo · 21/08/2021 10:46

I also think of Lorna Sage, literary academic and friend of Angela Carter, whose biography I read years ago.

Probably her autobiography ‘Bad Blood’ - it was a great book.
lottiegarbanzo · 21/08/2021 12:02

Yes, that's it. Really good.
