Hannah, Louisa and… Emmeline

Livvielo · 19/08/2021 03:15

Becoming a bit obsessed with this Grin but after my suggestion of Marley didn’t go down too well, and my next possible contender - Talitha- had mixed reviews (and ended up being scrapped due to the pronunciation issue..)
My DH threw a name in the mix earlier that seems to tick both our boxes.
Emmeline.
He likes classic names. I like something a little different- I don’t know any little Emmelines. And I love the nickname Emmy.
I call Louisa Lulu, Hannah has an unrelated nickname to her name.

So… does it past the mumsnet test? Do you know any Emmelines? I can see it might get confused with Emily?
I do like the name Emily as well but maybe too popular?

Hannah, Louisa, Emmeline
Hannah. Louisa, Theodore

Just need a baby now….. Smile

Emily is much better & matches your DDs' names really well.

I have been called Emmeline as a nn for years on & off. It annoys the hell out of me as a nickname - I really wouldn't want to carry it around full time!

Emmy/Emmie/Emme is also pretty popular here, if you wanted something less common.

Have you considered Eliza? You could use Ellie/Lizzie etc day to day & it goes really well with your other names.

I’m an Emmeline! Didn’t know any others growing up, have only met one other. I was never teased for my name and everyone my mother introduced me to said it was lovely.
I tend to go by Emmy for short. :)

Sh05 · 19/08/2021 04:29

I love Emmeline, it's so pretty! Emmie for nickname.

Lemonsyellow · 19/08/2021 04:32

I know a couple of Emmelines. It was popular in the mid-90s. It’s OK as a name, but a bit frilly compared to your other DC names.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/08/2021 04:35

It's a good name with a great history. Who doesn't like Hot Chocolate and the suffragettes? Grin I met one on a plane once and she loved her name. Classic and unusual at the same time. The only issue is the nickname.

Emme
Emmie
Emmy

There's no fixed spelling.

Rosiiiiie · 19/08/2021 05:10

My sister is an Emmeline. She used to go by Emmy in school but nobody calls her that anymore.

CustardyCreams · 19/08/2021 05:32

Emmeline is a beautiful name, I love nn Lin or Linnie.

Emma was 80s-popular and not in a good way, Emily is so over-used it is depressing to make more of them.

Chunkymenrock · 19/08/2021 05:47

Yes I do quite like it but prefer Emerald. Much better than the utterly dull Emma or Emily, as a previous pp suggested.

Balonzette · 19/08/2021 05:52

Emmeline is great! Don't downgrade to Emily like a PP said, Emily is ever so dull. Emmeline is wonderful.

RuthW · 19/08/2021 07:25

Lovely

PlainJane1000 · 19/08/2021 07:42

I think you have found the one! Beautiful name and I think it goes well with Hannah and Louisa.

user1493494961 · 19/08/2021 07:46

Yes, I think it passes, it's lovely and goes well with Hannah and Louisa.

petitdonkey · 19/08/2021 07:49

Absolutely beautiful but I’ve never been sure of the pronunciation- is it Emma-lean or Emma-lyne?

CaffiSaliMali · 19/08/2021 09:02

Emmeline is lovely and goes very nicely with Hannah and Louisa.

Goes really well with your other names 😊

MrsGilly1 · 19/08/2021 09:11

Emmeline is really pretty and love the nickname Emme too xx

HitsAndMrs · 22/08/2021 22:07

Do the Emmelines on this thread ever have to correct people on the pronunciation ?

I'm sure you'd get a lot of Emma-line /Emma-leen/Emma-lin?

It is a gorgeous name and it is on my list but I do feel it will confuse people with how to say it.

Babydust13 · 22/08/2021 22:38

I love it

TatianaBis · 22/08/2021 22:52
  1. Emmeline is awful, sounds like cow
  2. Never would it occur to me to name a child based on what posters here say. This place is super conservative slash insular. And some really grim names are weirdly popular - Vivienne, Dorothy, Ottilie.
TatianaBis · 22/08/2021 22:53

Emily, overused as it is is miles better and goes better with your other names.

The only person I’ve corrected more than once was my gran, who kept calling me Emma-line instead of -leen. I’m sure she did it on purpose.
DramaAlpaca · 23/08/2021 01:03

Emmeline is lovely. Go for it.

EdithNeedsemoshsupport · 23/08/2021 01:06

A good alternative for emmeline could be Emmalou, Beautiful name, very soft and rolls off the tongue. We were going to use it for DD3 but we found out it was a boy so went with Sebastian.
