I have a DD called Octavia. In our case it was a last minute spur of the moment decision in the labour ward on 8th August. We had been completely stuck on a name for the baby if it was a girl. Middle name is taken from the hospital where she was born (Anne). We call her Tavey and some friends call her Occy. As a kid she loved the Skoda promotional stuff as she could get freebie pens and stuff with her name on!

I prefer Octavia, but you you socialise with other types of 'Octavia'?

This is going to sound very bad, and I don't mean to cause any offence what so ever, it's just a name like that around here would stick out like a sore thumb!

We have Lucy, Claire, Katie, Sarah, Vicky, Emma. Not sure if it's a regional thing.

"Lucy, Claire, Katie, Sarah, Vicky, Emma."

Really?? Where are you? The '80's? You could be reading out the register for my class in 1987.

Wow defo on the posh mumsnet side. None of the children I’ve ever come across in 20+years of working with them have had names like these or most of the ones suggested! Grin

GintyMcGinty · 20/08/2021 14:53

I don't like either.

I drive a Skoda Octavia - its a nice enough name for my car.
Cosima - sound like a magician.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 20/08/2021 15:00

Sorry, both awful and rather pretentious, a bit like Oscar and Hugo - try too hard names.

TatianaBis · 20/08/2021 15:23

Trying hard to be what?

Cosima is Italian - why is an Italian name pretentious? Sienna is apparently ok? Sophia, Mia, Isabella etc

Oscar is in the top 10 most popular names.

Hence me saying a name like those mentioned would stick out like a sore thumb.

Is it the new Skoda?

Inthesameboatatmo · 20/08/2021 16:09

I love the name Octavia, but since I've visited an aquarium with an octopus with that name it doesnt have the same ring to it 🤣

Moodyblue12 · 20/08/2021 19:01

I have a DD called Octavia born 8/8 weighing 8lbs, so it's interesting reading this thread 😂
I've only received nice comments about her name (to my face maybe 😂)
We're definitely not posh! I wouldn't have chosen the name if she hadn't been born when she was though as I personally think it needs some significance to the 8th. However, I'd go for it if that doesn't bother you. 8 is also very lucky in Chinese cultures and there's Octavia Hill who was a social reformer. A few people have joked about the Skoda but Kia, Elise, Cleo are all girl names so that doesn't bother me.
Cosima is quite nice too but like others said the nickname cossi is off putting.
Best wishes for your pregnancy x

myheartskippedabeat · 20/08/2021 22:59

I work with an Octavia and she calls herself "Tav"

LadyWithLapdog · 20/08/2021 23:03

I had Cosima on my shortlist. It’s lovely.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 20/08/2021 23:45

Neither!

DemBonesDemBones · 21/08/2021 00:18

Love them both! They would be very well received where I live-unusual but not completely out there.
