I always fancied boys in souped up Novas when I was a teenager. Wouldn't call a kid it tho.

FreezerBird · 18/08/2021 09:43

I'm 45 which is probably prime age for associating it with the car, but I don't at all.

I have a fab friend from university (so she'd also be mid-40s) called Nova and I've never made the car connection.

It's just her name, and she's great, so I like it!

Peppapigforlife · 18/08/2021 09:58

It's Avon backwards.

ChrissyPlummer · 18/08/2021 10:38

@SpongebobNoPants

Where I live, Nova has become a very very popular name… sorry if I offend, but it’s definitely a chav / scream at your kids in the street sort of name. I’m trying to be polite and not classist in my phrasing but you get the idea Blush
You summed it up in a more polite way than what I was going to say. I agree with you and @Balonzette.
bbgxd · 18/08/2021 12:21

It's an Instagram mum/celeb name, very trendy now

The name itself is actually nice, but very faddy at the moment

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 18/08/2021 12:25

Passed my driving test in a Nova.

Also Champagne Super Nova.

HumunaHey · 18/08/2021 12:38

Makes me think of Teen Mom (my guilty pleasureBlush). Two kids are called Nova on the show - well one on Teen Mom and one on Teen Mom 2. For that reason. I wouldn't give my child that name.

Also as a PP has said, it's becoming quite a doggy name.

Gwenhwyfar · 18/08/2021 12:40

@Laurennjjd

I guess the car association will die out, but I’m 36 and it was still a car of choice for many of in my 6th form when we were driving old bangers around, so it does just make me think of the car
It makes me think of the failed ad campaign in Spanish speaking countries for this car as 'no va' means 'it doesn't go'.
GintyMcGinty · 18/08/2021 12:40

My mum used to drive a vauxhall nova - it was a nice wee car.

Gwenhwyfar · 18/08/2021 12:40

@IVflytrap

It makes me think of the story that Vauxhall had to rename the Nova in Spanish speaking countries, because "no va" means "doesn't go".

On the plus side, if you name her Nova, you have the built in obvious nickname of supernova.

Sorry, cross posted.
Horriblewoman · 18/08/2021 12:43

Scotia

Maskedpotato · 18/08/2021 12:45

Where I live it is one of the 4 letter names often hyphenated with Mae or Grace.

Lcachu · 18/08/2021 13:07

Champagne super...

Fancymice · 18/08/2021 13:10

Nova to me just brings to mind polish place names because it means 'new', like nowa huta. I means new in other Eastern European languages too, so for anyone one else from that region it won't 'scan' as a name

freelions · 18/08/2021 13:11

Agree with PPs that Nola or Nora are much nicer

Its not awful but my main association is the car, it would feel like naming a child Corsa or Cortina

texasss · 18/08/2021 15:20

Nova and Astra. Such beautiful names.

Sadly people are less keen on the brother, Volkswagen Golf GTI.

opinionminion · 18/08/2021 18:22

Nova = Vauxhall, Supernova and Nova Scotia
Please think about the bestowing of such a name.

Thatsnotmypolarbear · 18/08/2021 18:30

It's ok. I feel like it's a bit of a trendy name at the moment which will probably date badly. Also reminds me of Nova Scotia.

Livefortherain · 18/08/2021 18:54

I LOVE Nova! DH said we couldn't have it because it is a character in one of the games he was playing at the time (I didn't know that). But we ended up having a boy anyway!

DemBonesDemBones · 18/08/2021 19:11

I love it so much!

Trinacham · 18/08/2021 19:45

My cat's name (it is a unisex name.. my cat is male) not sure I would have named a child it but just personal preference. I like it though Smile
