I think it's because there used to be so many Marys and Margarets, they came up with lots of diminutives so people could identify their particular Margaret or Mary! I'm sure Daisy was originally a NN for Margaret too, which doesn't make sense but hey ho

I actually call my daughter Molly quite a lot, no idea why as her name is Jasmine. It’s not catching on though it’s just me

I find it odd so many posters making the drug reference. I work with troubled teens who talk about drugs a lot (unfortunately) and I’ve never heard them use Molly, if so it bypassed me. Maybe it’s because MDMA isn’t their drug of choice. It seems quite a dated reference to me, like Lucy being linked with LSD.
