Idris?

We have Welsh heritage, but live in London. We love the name Idris, but when we previously mentioned it (during another pregnancy) it received really mixed opinions…a couple of friends have said it would be cultural appropriation/“not right for a white person” as in London it is viewed as a Muslim name. Just wondering what people’s thought are and if anybody thinks it offensive for a white child to have this name in a multicultural area.

Other options include Osian and Nico

I love Idris! DH vetoed it partly because of the Elba connection despite living in Wales. I don't personally think it's a problem. FWIW we have an Emrys instead 😊

IME many people just don’t know it’s Welsh; your friends also don’t seem to understand what cultural appropriation is.

As an arabic name it was considered old fashioned until fairly recently.

Not keen on Nico as a welsh name and I know so many Osians that it has become quite run of the mill. Prefer Osian to Idris, but Idris is less likely to be mispronounced/misspelt.

I'm Welsh and I love Idris and Osian as names ❤️
