New Name... How would you pronounce it?

Heya!

My baby girl is due in January, and I wondered what you all think of the name Emmalia, and how you would pronounce it.

I'm not as keen on the emphases in the classically-pronounced name 'Amelia', but I love the name pronounced Emma-LEE-ah. Does this come across in the spelling Emmalia?

I know it doesn't really exist, but I think it's just so pretty!

Thank you so much :)

I’d pronounce it EMM-AR-LIA too.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 11/08/2021 12:27

I'd also pronounce Em-ah-lia.

It just doesn't look right written down. Very laboured.

I don't think many people will think it says Emma-Leah.

Seems a lifetime of correcting pronunciation and spelling for your poor DD...

Seesawmummadaw · 11/08/2021 12:28

Agree it will be shortened to Emma (which is a nice name).

I would say Em ma lee ah

What about Emmaline ?

Givemebackmylilo · 11/08/2021 12:29

@ChessieFL

My first thought was Em-AH-lee-a so for me it doesn’t do what you want it to do.
Agree
Givemebackmylilo · 11/08/2021 12:30

How are people changing AM to the EM sound 🤨

CorianderBee · 11/08/2021 12:30

Em-maah-lee-ah

brokenbiscuitsx · 11/08/2021 12:30

What about Emmelia? That would solve the pronunciation issue, but it’s whether you like the spelling…

Potatoy · 11/08/2021 12:30

@CorianderBee

Em-maah-lee-ah
Like this
LongTimeMammaBear · 11/08/2021 12:32

The same as Amelia except Em instead of Am

Tibtab · 11/08/2021 12:32

Em-ar-lia

Greenmarmalade · 11/08/2021 12:33

Me too-
em-AH-lee-a

Maybe:
Emma-Lia
(Emmelia- I think ppl would say emm-EE-lee-a)

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/08/2021 12:33

Emmelia would solve confusion.

SuperSketchy · 11/08/2021 12:39

I think Emma-Leah would be the most obvious. The others look like Emilia or Amelia with a youneeq spelling tbh.

user16395699 · 11/08/2021 12:42

I guessed what you wanted but only because I've known Amelia and Emilia whose parents had chosen different pronunciations and therefore spent their lives correcting people.

I think your spelling is too ambiguous. You'll constantly be correcting people.

I don't have an issue with new names, although if you use one you should be prepared for snobbishness / hostility because some people seem to feel it challenges their sense of identity when other people use new names.

BeaBeaBuzz · 11/08/2021 12:45

What about Amala? Or Emilia? You know, an actual name

Iwantcauliflowercheese · 11/08/2021 12:49

The way you want it pronounced definitely doesn't come across in your spelling. I immediately thought Em- marley- a.

whatausername · 11/08/2021 12:52

@mumsiedarlingrevolta

I'd also pronounce Em-ah-lia.

It just doesn't look right written down. Very laboured.

Agree with this. Think Emma-Leah is your best option, OP
MaMelon · 11/08/2021 12:53

Emma-leah - like 2 separate names which have been hyphenated. Which effectively they have.

Your very odd spelling is just going to give the girl a lifetime of correcting people. Never understood why people are so happy to do this to their kids in their desperate attempt to be different.

BillyIsMyBunny · 11/08/2021 12:53

I’d pronounce it ‘Em-AR-Li-Ah with the emphasis on the second syllable.

I’m not sure the best way to spell the name to get the pronunciation you want, I think the suggestion of Emma-Lia/ Emma-Leah is probably the best one.

HeronLanyon · 11/08/2021 12:54

Bit like the older pronunciation of Himalaya

Em-ah-lia.
With the stress on the second syllable.

DinaofCloud9 · 11/08/2021 12:56

I would say Em ar lee a. Maybe spell it Emmaleah. Looks a bit clunky though.

Skybluepinkgiraffe · 11/08/2021 12:57

It looks pretty written down, but I'm another advice to Emma-Leah if you want that pronunciation.
I read it as Em Arlia

PattyPan · 11/08/2021 12:58

I would say Em-EL-ia for Emmelia, not Em-el-EE-a so I don’t think that would solve the issue unfortunately @brokenbiscuitsx

WhereTheFuck · 11/08/2021 12:58

Actually OP the traditional pronunciation of the name 'Emilia' is the one you want. (Emilia originally was pronounced to rhyme with Sophia and Dorothea etc). So you could just call her Emilia, but I do think you will still get people pronouncing it wrong
