Boy’s name help

Me and DP have struggled a bit for a boy’s name as we seem to have quite different tastes. We have a shortlist and plan to see what he looks like when he’s here but I’m concerned that none is ‘the one’ and I have reservations about them all.

Nathaniel (Nate) - DP’s least favourite, he associates it with a child from a different background to us.
Reuben - I would hate Ruby as a NN and not sure if people would assume we’re Jewish
Isaac (Zac) - I don’t like how popular it is and worry it will constantly be misspelt
Gabriel (Gabe) - potential for playground bullying?
Jonah - Unlucky or a jinx

Middle name will be Jasper (no chance of this as a first name), surname short and ends in an X 🦊, so some names don’t sound right with it.

I know all of the names above are biblical but we’re not religious and that’s not a consideration, we’re not a fan of ‘old man’ names, anything too that could be seen as pretentious or chavvy 🤦‍♀️.

We would prefer something not overly common, but I suppose anything below top 50 is ok.

Also I’ve been banned from having anything with a ‘th’ sound as I’m from South London and everyone in my family will pronounce it as an ‘f’ and we live in Liverpool where pretty much every name gets shortened so I have to like the nn 😫.

Please tell me if I’m being hormonal and overthinking the names on our list or please give lots of suggestions; I’m really hoping we’ve just skated over the perfect name somehow!

We have a Reuben and everybody shortens it to Reubs. Not a single person has called him Roo or Ruby. I think whatever you shorten it to, will be what other people also use as it’s not exactly a long name in the first place.

I like Gabriel best from your list. How about Raphael? Raphy 🦊 sounds good.

I have a Gabriel. He is 18 now and never been teased for his name. Never met another Gabriel. It has often been shortened to Gabe. Though be prepared as most people read it as 'Gabrielle' and this annoys him greatly!!

Leo Jasper (if it must be Jasper)

Disclaimer : I'm not British, but if I met a Reuben I'd probably end up calling them Ben.

Actually, how about Ben(jamin) ?

If you like Rudi, then Rudolf seems like a more obvious choice though.

Marshall ?

I think Ben is a possibility. I don’t hate it but it’s a touch too common for my taste (plus the name of my mum’s crazy dog!)

I think Rudolf is natural for Rudi to come from but I don’t think it works in this country- the reindeer association is too strong!

That’s good to know, thanks 😊

I especially like Gabriel and Ruben from your list.
