Oliva or Olivella

Do you prefer Oliva or Olivella for a girl?

We've ruled out Olivia because it's too popular but Olive seems too plain for us. We have Spanish links and want to choose between these two names but can't decide!

I quite like Olivine as a PP suggested, maybe Olivina? Or Olivinia?

Olivine is a mineral, clear ones are used as gemstones (sometimes the gemstones are called peridot, and in some traditions the August birthstone - a woman I know with this name was born in August), so it's similar to calling a child Ruby or Sapphire or Pearl - I'm not sure the added flourishments do much to any of those names, and I find Olivina a bit difficult to say &, as a pp suggested, Lavinia is probably easier to remember and say than Olivinia.

Gemma2019 · 01/08/2021 17:23

Olivina is a brand of men’s toiletries. How about Olivinaria or Oliviniarina

Nuuktown · 01/08/2021 17:36

English people won’t necessarily know how to pronounce Olivella properly

Please tell me you’re joking?

mutedrainbows · 01/08/2021 19:28

Oliviniarina is just bonkers 😂

'How about Olivinaria or Oliviniarina'

😂

How about Oliviarellaellaohohoh?

Adventing · 01/08/2021 20:25

I love Olive and Livia, Lavania is a good option too. As pp have said your other options are a bit long and complicated and Oliva sounds too much like Oliver

joieria · 01/08/2021 21:06

Thanks for your ideas. Obviously some people are finding my choices very funny, I'm just doing what everyone is doing and trying to pick the best name for my baby. I am taking your comments into account x

Olive is a great name.

greendress789 · 01/08/2021 21:11

What about Livia instead?

Littlekittyscupcake · 01/08/2021 21:13

I love Olivia. It some lovely shortened versions to it as well. Livia and Liv. Livia etc.

Littlekittyscupcake · 01/08/2021 21:14

I’m not keen on Olive though. It sounds like an old lady’s name and reminds me of Olive from Popeye.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 01/08/2021 21:18

If you really want an "Olive" name and Olivia is too popular for you, then of the other ones you've suggested Olivine sounds the best to me OP - I think most people would guess it's pronounced "Oli - veen" (like better known Alexandrine) and it has a nice enough sound imo.

DrDetriment · 01/08/2021 21:20

@debwong I immediately thought Frogmella too Smile.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 01/08/2021 21:21

Olivella sounds like a cheap margarine product 🤔

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 01/08/2021 21:36

Love Olive!

Foxhasbigsocks · 01/08/2021 21:41

Op, I’m really sorry but I don’t think those names will work in the UK.

Foxhasbigsocks · 01/08/2021 21:42

Olivia or Olive would be ok

Elderflower14 · 01/08/2021 21:45

Exactly what I came to say.. Sounds like Olivio!!
DipperandMabel · 01/08/2021 21:58

What about Lydia? Instead of the slightly silly suggestions, Lydia is a similar sounding name, not silly and is beautiful. Still fairly popular but not as popular as Olivia.

Also, Olive is nice too and not overly popular either. I’m not sure why Olive is being dismissed….

olidora63 · 01/08/2021 22:00

Olive is a beautiful name 💕

GettingItOutThere · 01/08/2021 22:14

neither. bloody awful

poor kid will spend her life justifying her name. Just give her a normal name

reminds me of calling a kid "haven" on here. Why do parents need to be different!

peaceinourtime · 03/08/2021 06:48

Go with Olivia if you want to use it. I know a young Olyvia, it looks stupid and the child goes by Oly.

RestingStitchFace · 03/08/2021 08:59

Olive is lovely. I know a little Olive and it's cute.

Agree with all the previous comments about Olivella sounding like margarine....
