Love Kit always have but hate Katherine. Can I still use it?

I’ve never thought of it as a girls name, only know male Kits. But if you like it I think it’s substantial enough to be used as a stand alone name. I would be tempted to give her a more traditional feminine middle name though to balance it out a bit-but that’s just me.

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 22/07/2021 13:07

Kit is normally a shortening for Christopher or Christian similar names and Kitty would be the female version. I think I would at least want to give the name Kitty if not a longer name like Christina then shorten it to Kit at home but give a bit of choice as she gets older.

MirandaBlu · 23/07/2021 17:20

I think Kit is typically a girls name in the USA (short for Catherine, Kathryn, Kathleen, etc) and a boys' name in the UK (Christopher and maybe Christian). But I also know a British Catherine, called Kitty as a child, who uses Kit as an adult. Don't see why you can't play around with it, though, for any K sound > t name. I wouldn't use it as a stand-alone.

Onlinedilema · 23/07/2021 17:23

Never heard it used for a girl but if you like it then go for it.

howmuchistoomuch2021 · 23/07/2021 18:07

I know someone with a catherine shortened to kit. Hadn't come across it for a girl before that but it doesn't really matter what other people think. If you like it, you should go for it. People will get used to it.

Feel a bit sad no one has suggested my name yet!

My name is Kathleen. I was almost called Katherine but in hindsight am glad I wasn't because it is quite harsh sounding.

I think you shouldn't call your child Kit because most people with our names tend to shorten them anyway. Im Kat - I've met a Katie, another Kat and someone who just goes by their full name.

It's nice to have the choice. Also - Kit reminds me of the character from A Series of Unfortunate Events. She is pretty cool.

pinkyredrose · 23/07/2021 21:06

I was just thinking of Kathleen! Lovely name!

KatDubs261 · 23/07/2021 21:52

I feel better now @pinkyredrose. Only one of my parents and older relatives call me that these days. Smile

Violetlavenders · 02/08/2021 09:50

I know a female Kit! I like it.

Kit can also be short for any K name eg Katherine, Kathleen, Katrina etc.

HPLikecraft · 02/08/2021 22:44

Strange that people are suggesting Kitty, Kate, Katie as full name alternatives to Katherine/Kathryn/Catherine... they're already diminutives of those names. Seems a bit strange to use Kit as a diminutive for a diminutive.

May as well just use Kit on its own (which is lovely, by the way)

Alpenguin · 02/08/2021 22:44

Kit is short for Christopher where I am

whattodo2019 · 03/08/2021 00:18

i love the name Kit for a boy, I don't see it as a girls name at all

Violetlavenders · 03/08/2021 07:30

Kit feels feminine. It look ike it's short for Kitten or Kitty.

You do know that approx 50% of all kittens (and indeed adult cats) are MALE? 😆
DancesWithTortoises · 04/08/2021 11:57

I only know Kit as short for Christopher.

NautaOcts · 04/08/2021 11:58

Get your Kit off

NautaOcts · 04/08/2021 11:58

Is what it makes me think of.
And I would associate it with a male
