Greek girl's names

Raggeo · 21/07/2021 14:03

We are a half British, half Greek family. We live in the UK but any name has to work in both languages/cultures. What do you think of our shortlist of baby girl names? Please rank and happy to hear positive and negative comments.

Artemis
Zoe
Melina
Arianna
Sophia

Middle name and surname will be Greek,if that makes any difference.

Sorry but when I read the list the first thing I thought of is melena.. it's pronounced the same as melina.. and its a medical term for bloody poo (sorry I'm a nurse and in my head I was like why on earth would anyone name their child that)
I like Zoe!

Lockdowndramaqueen · 21/07/2021 21:11

Another vote for Artemis! Beautiful, strong, phonetic, unusual. Lovely name.

Undertheoldlindentree · 21/07/2021 21:36

I feel Arianna is too connected with Arianna Grande at the moment. Ariadne is lovely, Amaryllis? Phaedra? Helena?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/07/2021 21:47

Melissa

SantaSue · 21/07/2021 21:47

Just wondering how Artemis is pronounced?
Is it more like Ar-TEA-miss or AR-tuh-mis? Or neither?

ILoveShula · 21/07/2021 21:50

AR-tuh-mis

MrsRLynde · 21/07/2021 21:50

Maia, Xylia, Ariadne and Athena.

MrsRLynde · 21/07/2021 21:51

Arianna is lovely.

SW1amp · 21/07/2021 21:51

I know an Oenone (ee-no-nee) and she loves her name
I think it’s really beautiful

irresistibleoverwhelm · 21/07/2021 21:54

Artemis is lovely! We have Greek friends whose daughters are Artemis, Antigone and Atlanta! All gorgeous but Artemis is my favourite.

SW1amp · 21/07/2021 21:55

Also really interesting to see that Artemis is traditionally a girls name

The most pretentious couple I know have a son called Artemis, presumably telegraphing their lack of knowledge to many people Grin

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 21/07/2021 21:59

I love Xanthe, Athena/Athina & Eleni .
I like Maria as I know an absolutely lovely Greek girl called Maria
I also like Calista/Kalista too

Snoopsnoggysnog · 21/07/2021 22:00

I love your list. Artemis is a great name.
I also love Athena and Xanthe.

AliasGrape · 21/07/2021 22:03

I love Artemis

Marina is also lovely, I strongly considered that for dd

I had a Greek friend at uni called Aristea which I thought was really pretty, not sure how well it works in England though.

Thalia ?

Phyllis321 · 21/07/2021 22:07

Antigone nn Tiggy?

Iseeyoulookingatme · 21/07/2021 22:13

My mum's name is Eleni. I love it. I also like Iris and if I ever had a girl that's the name I would choose. My aunty's name is maritza.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/07/2021 22:15

Marina is a beautiful name.

CorianderBee · 21/07/2021 22:18

Confused as to why people thought Artemis was male when it's one of the big female Godesses...

ILoveShula · 21/07/2021 22:20

Artemis Fowl

Raggeo · 21/07/2021 22:25

I'm happily surprised that Artemis is getting lots of positives, since it's probably the least known in the UK.
Good to know about the other meaning of Melina, think I will take that one off the list!!
Some other nice suggestions, thanks.

gerbilfur · 21/07/2021 23:02

I have a Greek friend called Ekaterina. Greek names are all really nice

Enko · 21/07/2021 23:25

Melina
Arianna
Sophia
Artemis
Zoe

I Love love love Melina I wanted it for one of our dds but dh wasn't keen

Arianna is beautiful

Sophia one of the few classics I truly love (even like is hard with me on the classics)

Artemis is nice not one Id pick but I like it

I do not like Zoe bad personal associations x 3

Ikeameatballs · 21/07/2021 23:35

I love Zoe.
Eleni is nice.
Somehow I can’t love Artemis. Sophia is nice but very popular. It’s also not obviously Greek due to it’s popularity.

OtherGreek girl names I like are:
Penelope
Antigone
Calliope nn Callie

@CorianderBee

Confused as to why people thought Artemis was male when it's one of the big female Godesses...
Because of Artemis Fowl. I'm not really familiar with mythology so only know it through the character name.
