What are your opinions on this alternative spelling of Naomi? I thought the new spelling makes the pronunciation more clear “nigh-oh-me” and it avoids teasing because Naomi spelled backwards is I moan.

niomi looks like a typo to me!

QuizzicalTikTok · 16/07/2021 15:42

It's just incorrect.

MartyHart · 16/07/2021 15:42

I've never heard anyone struggle to pronounce Naomi. I prefer the traditional spelling. It's a lovely name.

leakymcleakleak · 16/07/2021 15:44

I would pronounce it differently - Neeomee, rather than Nye-oh-mee. I'd also assume it was a typo.

SCMocha · 16/07/2021 15:44

I assumed you would say it 'nee - oh - me' so it doesn't really solve any pronunciation problems.

EssentialHummus · 16/07/2021 15:45

I’d assume it was a typo. There’s also a similar French name - Noemi iirc? - if that’s any use.

Redcat101 · 16/07/2021 15:46

Do you think the backwards thing is not a problem then? It’s my only reservation with the original spelling.

ApolloandDaphne · 16/07/2021 15:47

I say it sort of Nay-oh-may. The alternative spelling looks silly to me.It looks like a brand of medicine or face cream.

SummaLuvin · 16/07/2021 15:49

I don't think it's a name unusual enough that many people struggle with pronunciation so I wouldn't see the point in using this new spelling. I personally don't like it that much.

With regards to teasing I think it being I MOAN backwards is really reaching, yes some kid has probably been teased with that at some point but it's not a name that's asking for it. In my experience teasing is far more about the kid themselves than a name. A self-assured confident child is far less likely to be picked on than a shy nervous child regardless of name. Don't forget that any name can be turned against a kid if the bullies want to - Smelly Sarah for example.

Spidey66 · 16/07/2021 15:51

I like Naomi and until you pointed it out never even crossed my mind that backwards it was I moan.

Maggiesfarm · 16/07/2021 15:52

Looks dreadful. Not all people are so thick that they wouldn't recognise the name 'Naomi' when they saw it. It's a lovely name as it is.

Whatever next? 'Aleesha' instead of 'Alicia'? Sheesh.

HappyAsASandboy · 16/07/2021 15:53

I don't think the spelled backwards thing is a problem at all. I would be quite impressed with any kids that even noticed that Confused

There is always something to use to target a kid if someone wants to find something. Naomi spelled backwards isn't going to be it!

TatianaBis · 16/07/2021 15:54

I thought Nee omi so I don't think that spelling is clear, it just looks like a typo.

Faranth · 16/07/2021 16:03

It just looks like you don't know how to spell Naomi and made a mistake, I'm afraid.
Like Aleesha and Chivonne.

Your DD would be constantly correcting people on how to spell it, it would drive her nuts.

Uramaki · 16/07/2021 20:06

This is the 2nd thread on the same name I've seen today so must be popular!

Uramaki · 16/07/2021 20:07

Ah the other thread was the same OP

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 16/07/2021 20:23

DD1 is Naomi, never had any problems with it being mispronounced and I am the only one who has ever mentioned the backwards spelling.

Sowingbees · 16/07/2021 20:26

Do you want Nay omi, Ni omi or Nar mee?

Couldhavebeenme2 · 16/07/2021 20:27

I'd think you just didn't know how to spell Naomi and feel sorry for your dd lumbered with a wrongly-spwlled name.

IVflytrap · 16/07/2021 20:33

I would pronounce Niomi Nee-oh-mee.

I have never thought much about how Naomi is spelt backwards. I genuinely can't see it being any sort of problem.

I only pronounce Naomi with a "nay" sound at the start. If you really did want to make up a spelling that sounds like nigh-oh-mee, I would go with something like Nyomi.

GammyLeg · 16/07/2021 20:36

You are definitely reaching with I moan! You could probably over think any name like that. John has been popular since day one and means toilet. Kate rhymes with hate. Etc etc.

Biancadelrioisback · 16/07/2021 20:37

I know a couple Naomi's who pronounce it Nay-omi and Ni-omi.
I've never seen a Niomi but I have seen a Noami before which did make me chuckle

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/07/2021 21:37

Nyomi. If you want the Ny-omee pronunciation
Naiome. If you want the Nay-omee pronunciation.
or you could go with Naome.

TatianaBis · 16/07/2021 21:40

Noami before which did make me chuckle

Noémi/e is the French/Italian/Spanish version.

annacondom · 16/07/2021 21:43

Stick with the original.
