Are River or Rudy popular where you live ??

Hi all, do you know many or any boys called River or Rudy ? I'm not looking for something totally wild and out there, but I have a strong history of picking names that are fairly low down on the ons official list that have become very popular since. I've got three girls, d
So boys names is new territory for me ! I'm aware they won't be everyone's cup of tea as just seen one of them on the names you hate thread ! Other names we have considered are Frank and Ziggy which is a bit out there Wink

Thanks

Thank you for all your replies, I wasn't expecting that many, so that's really useful !!
I love River, it does seem like it's pretty popular at the moment, but Is that a bad thing ? One of my daughters names is top 5 now, it certainly wasn't when I named her 15 years ago, but it doesn't seem to bother her having a popular name.

I like Rudy too, but have been wondering about the high possibility of name calling, kids can be mean and it's quite an easy target !

Does anyone know when the ONS release new list of names, hoping it will be before the end of sept !

Interesting response to Ziggy, maybe I'll add it back to the shortlist 😉

A rudy is a fart in this house.

Pennylane87 · 13/07/2021 22:31

@RozHuntleysLeftHand

I know 3 (!) male Rudyard, and 2 female Rivers, but I move in hippy/alternative circles, and they are some of the least out there names in these circles! (Merlin anyone?)
adds Merlin to list 🤦‍♀️

River and Rudy are nice, I don't know any round where I live, but a friend of a friend has a little boy called Rudy - it suits him
The names Rudy and River are not overused but I know loads of Rory, Ronnie, Reuben, Roman's etc. Classes full of them. All of those are some of the fastest rising names and are all top 100 so Rudy and River could blend in a bit / get lost with all those popular names.

Travielkapelka · 14/07/2021 07:35

I love Rudy and for a while we considered it for one of our sons but I couldn’t go through with it, it didn’t feel like a serious name (and I’m the last person the insist on proper names on birth certificates)

I think the data for the previous year is usually released towards the end of August

bloominglovelyorange · 14/07/2021 09:10

@TwoMountains ONS government website ("release calendar") currently says "September - October 2021" for the 2020 stats. Seems like we'll have to wait a bit longer this year. Booo

YeDancer · 14/07/2021 09:25

Depends on where you live. It wouldn't be common or popular in most of Scotland for example.

I do know a toddler Ziggy though.

sarah13xx · 14/07/2021 12:17

I love both. Don’t know any Rivers and only one Rudy but spelt Rudi

azimuth299 · 15/07/2021 19:59

I know one Rudy and no Rivers!

inmyslippers · 15/07/2021 20:01

One Rudy

Lenny86 · 16/07/2021 18:53

We’re in east london and I know two toddlers called Ziggy, a 9 year old boy and 2 year old girl called Rudy, multiple Franks, but haven’t met a River. I would say Frank is the least out there of the names

Kneller92 · 20/07/2021 20:26

I've worked with children for over 10 years and have come across one River, one Rudy and three Ziggys. No Franks but lots of Frankies x

Pennylane87 · 22/07/2021 12:57

Thanks so much! I think we are slightly leaning towards river, mainly because my DD has started saying nudey Rudy for naked 😂 xx

The River I know is a girl.

BunnyRuddington · 22/07/2021 13:43

Not Rudyard, RUDY ffs autocorrect

I'm quite disappointed now Grin

Anyway, to answer the question I know one Rudy and no rivers Smile

SoupDragon · 22/07/2021 13:48

I know a dog called River.

I used to know an adult male Rudy but I don't know if it was short for something.

SoupDragon · 22/07/2021 13:49

I do think Rudy could be problematic, as you've discovered from "Nudey Rudy" 😂

FuckingHateRats · 22/07/2021 13:51

I know two boys with that name but they spell it Rudi - maybe a Scottish thing? It's definitely a middle class name around here.

Not River though.

Builderscrack · 22/07/2021 13:58

I’ve got a Rivva and a Rudi in the same class!

I do like River

Buckleyourseatbelt · 22/07/2021 14:20

I know many Franks/Frankie. Boy and girl.
I know of two Rudis.
I know of two Ziggys.
I ve not met any Rivers.

dannydyerismydad · 22/07/2021 14:57

I know 1 female River and 2 male Rudys.
