Brooke Cameron

This should maybe go in baby names... but it is a disagreement between my husband and I so I posted here for traffic!

Baby #2 due in a couple of weeks. If it's a boy we'll probably call him Brodie if it's a girl I like the name Brooke.

Problem is that our surname is Cameron and DH insists that the name would be said as Broo Cameron/Brooke Ameron....

I think if you hold the final 'k' a fraction of a second longer it's clear what the name is!

AIBU?
YANBU -A) That's a perfectly fine name don't over think it...
YABU- B) He's right I'm afraid- she'll have a lifetime of correcting people.

Cameron is a great Scottish surname, Brodie goes very well for a boy. How about some more Scottish/Celtic/Gaelic girls' names for inspiration? A quick Google....

Flora
Rhona
Marta
Màiri
Una

Defo just use Brodie if a girl or boy

Blacktothepink · 06/07/2021 21:26

Love Brodie
Bridie or Birdie for a girl

toastofthetown · 06/07/2021 21:26

I agree with your husband; Brooke Cameron sounds dreadful.

There's also no need to post for traffic when there's a well used baby name section...

YouJustFoldItIn · 06/07/2021 21:27

What about Oonagh? Goes nicely with Maeve, it's unsual and it goes well with Cameron. Or use Brodie for girl. I think it's lovely for a girl.

Cantdoitallperfectly · 06/07/2021 21:27

Sorry OP I agree that Brooke Cameron doesn't flow. I love the name Brodie but not sure for a girl. What about Brogan?

I see you like names ending in ‘a’.

Ava
Eliza
Nora
Noa

Terrazzo · 06/07/2021 21:31

Well Ameron isn’t a sur name (or it’s an unusual one!) and Broo isn’t a first name, so it won’t be a problem.

I won’t say our actual surname but we have the problem that if we use a name ending in S it will turn our surname into another name and first name is still a plausible name.

Eg Max Hudson - Mack Sudson (if Sudson was a real word)
Lucas Hudson - Luca Sudson

THAT would be annoying but I think Brooke Cameron is fine!

FionaMumsnet · 06/07/2021 21:32

We're just going to move this over to baby names.

Utilityroomenvy · 06/07/2021 21:36

Oh Grin and you’ve made me hungry now!!!

BeeKeeping · 06/07/2021 21:42

We're Scottish and in Scotland so the Scottish suggestions are welcome!

Brodie is definitely not androgynous in Scotland unfortunately, she'd have a lifetime of woe

What about Orla? That sounds nice with Cameron.

fourminutestosavetheworld · 07/07/2021 06:12

From your list, the only ones that don't work, for me, are Cora and Faye.

Cora Cameron is indeed too alliterative as you say.

Faye Cameron sounds a bit Fake Ameron to my ear.

Others all lovely.

Chilldonaldchill · 07/07/2021 08:07

I don't think it sounds too bad.
From my perspective the main issue would be a lifetime of people assuming she's called Cameron Brooke (or indeed that your son is called Cameron Brodie).
I work in a job where I have to call people into a room, having just seen their name and the number of times I've called "Thomas Jackson" when it's actually Jackson Thomas or "James Blair" when it's actually Blair James is A Lot.

Chilldonaldchill · 07/07/2021 08:08

I really love Nina Cameron and don't think it's forgettable at all. It's an unusual but beautiful name.
I also like Cora Cameron. I think the alliteration works.

TatianaBis · 07/07/2021 08:22

Iona Cameron?

Brooke is very 80s so I don’t think you’ve lost much.

MiddleParking · 07/07/2021 08:26

Nina isn’t forgettable at all, Nina Cameron is really beautiful!

Hathertonhariden · 07/07/2021 08:36

It sounds like the name of an estate agent or firm of solicitors to me sorry.

Kanaloa · 07/07/2021 15:46

It does run together a bit. Maybe and Nina actually sounds lovely together, could you maybe go for Nina Brooke.

KirstenBlest · 07/07/2021 18:53

Brooke Ameron.

Freya - very popular, bit meh - agree
Ula- sounds too Irish when paired with Maeve? Too unusual? - quite nice
Lena- pronunciation issues lee/len - could be pronounced Laina
Nina- forgettable? - quite nice
Lara- too closely associated with Croft?! - fine
Cora- close friends have one - too alliterative with Cameron...? - a bit alliterative
Alma- too similar to Alan? Dowdy...? - fine but will sound like Al MacAmeron
Faye- quite popular, no spark - Kay is better cos it sounds like Cake Ameron
Isla- sooo popular - too popular. Sounds like a Isle of Cameron

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 07/07/2021 19:26

Nina Cameron sounds really good!

mathanxiety · 08/07/2021 04:33

Your H is right. They run together.

Your list:
Freya - very popular, bit meh (agree)
Ula- sounds too Irish when paired with Maeve? Too unusual? (unusual, and is it Yula or Oola? Either way not great tbh)
Lena- pronunciation issues lee/len (nice, but yy pronunciation issues)
Nina- forgettable? (yes, agree, and I think you need to have a wispy figure to carry off the name)
Lara- too closely associated with Croft?! (No, best of the list)
Cora- close friends have one - too alliterative with Cameron...? (agree wrt alliteration and you can't poach friends' name)
Alma- too similar to Alan? Dowdy...? (yes, dowdy)
Faye- quite popular, no spark (wimpy name)
Isla- sooo popular (agree)

I like Lara, and the Croft association won't bother her peers.

How about:
Elspeth
Elke
Greta
Lucy
Una
Tessa
Lila
Flora
Finola
Nola
Romy
Ailsa

mathanxiety · 08/07/2021 04:35

Ula - Ooh lala...

Alfxn · 08/07/2021 05:04

Freya - nice but yes, popular
Ula- unusual, not Irish that I'm aware?
Lena- ok
Nina- love this option!! And great with your last name
Lara- also love this option! And nice with your surname
Cora- nice and i don't mind alliterative names, but your friends having one might be more of an issue
Alma- a bit dowdy IMO
Faye- nice but not ideal with your surname
Isla- nice but not ideal with your surname

Love Nina and Lara and they both go well with Maeve!
