Camilla - will people shorten it?

Thinking of the name Camilla. Is it likely to be shortened? Or will people assume to use the full name?

I'd think it may get shortened to Cam/Cammy.
You can't really stop that happening, she can, if she insists on Camilla, but she might not mind, or even want it shortened herself.

Collywibbles · 09/06/2021 03:27

My friend has a wee one called Camilla - she is known as Milla.

GimletGal · 09/06/2021 03:32

It could also be shortened to Millie/Milly/Milla which I rather like, but you might not.

Throughtheday · 09/06/2021 03:34

I know an adult Camilla who is Mills. My ds has a name that people shorten, but only older people have done it and only occasionally, not as a regular thing.

Do you not like one or all of the potential shortenings? I think you can control what family use but it’s harder at school.

PeterPipersPepper · 09/06/2021 03:43

I do like Millie but I think it’s a very popular name.

And I’m not so sure on Cammy!

I know nicknames can happen organically - or not at all - but as I don’t know any Camillas myself I wasn’t sure what was most likely.

It’s good to know these examples thank you.

I know three. Two are Milla and one is Cammi. But I would use the full name if it were me.

Lulu1919 · 09/06/2021 06:48

I know a Victoria ...she's Victoria .....she may get a short version in high school from friends but she can always say No !!

but so far she hasn't .

drpet49 · 09/06/2021 06:49

I know 2 Camillas. Both are know as Cam

elQuintoConyo · 09/06/2021 06:51

The only Camilla I knew (at school) was known as Camel. She was terribly posh, lovely girl, didn't mind in the least. Her family called her Camilla.

Milla/Milly/Cammy are so wet-sounding. But it'll be up to your daughter at school to say 'please don't call me that, I prefer my full name'.

Roselilly36 · 09/06/2021 06:56

I never shorten peoples names, I always call them by the name that they introduce themselves as, I think Camilla is a lovely choice OP.

Zippea · 09/06/2021 06:58

I have a Camilla - it is rarely shortened to Cammy (which is good as I hate it) but she is sometimes Millie

Violetlavenders · 09/06/2021 07:01

I don't shorten people's names unless asked to. Camilla is easy to say.

milinhas · 09/06/2021 07:04

I know a full name Camilla, and a couple of Millie/Millas, so it might but it’s not guaranteed.

Redlocks30 · 09/06/2021 07:09

Any names that came be shortened will be by some people. If they are too short, people will lengthen them-that is just the way of things. Some people will never shorten other peoples names, so I think it’s impossible to generalise.

Someone I used to work with had a mate called Christopher and when he was younger, his parents were so obsessed that it wasn’t shortened, that when friends phoned and asked to speak to Chris, he’d say ‘-topher’.

For the last 40 years, all his friend have called him Topher!

I know two, both known as Millie. Never heard anyone say Cammy to them?

EverNapping · 09/06/2021 07:47

No name is immune from shortening.

Yours sincerely,

Ooh I like Milla.
ILoveShula · 09/06/2021 08:52

Yes. Cam, Cami, Camel (yes really), Milly

Watercoloursky · 09/06/2021 08:56

I was at uni with a Camilla (just over a decade ago), we called her Milla/Mills.

SoupDragon · 09/06/2021 08:59

I don't think people in general will shorten it but it will develop amongst her friends/family

PeterPipersPepper · 09/06/2021 09:38

Thanks everyone. A lot of Millie/Mills/Milla answers so I’m glad I asked.

I don’t mind nicknames I just like to know what I’m in for!

My other daughters name has one obvious nickname and so I felt like I was consciously choosing that along with the longer name.
