Sullivan or Vince

So we're 18 days away from csection! Baby's gender is unknown.. we're set on a girls name but really struggling for a boy!

I loved Sullivan from the start but always get ready for the negative responses from people which kind of puts me off. My fiancé still loves it - I just don't know if I'm brave enough to use it.

Another name we've came across is Vince, just Vince though this wouldn't be short for Vincent.

Middle name will likely be Lloyd - my late Nan's maiden name.

Sullivan Lloyd
Vince Lloyd

Please help! 🙃

I also like Vincent, don't even mind Vinnie but I don't like Vince, or Sullivan.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 04/06/2021 00:29

Of the two, definitely Sullivan for me. Yes, its part of the "surname as first name" boom but it is no where as popular as Finley, Mason, Riley, Harrison, Jackson etc (which means it may hopefully be less likely to date than some others in the trend).

Vince sounds harsher to me - plus he will likely always have to explain "it's not Vincent", as it isn't one of those popular standalone nicknames like Charlie, Harry, Jack, Max etc (and Vincent could be entering the top 100 soon so there will be more of them about.)

miltonj · 04/06/2021 00:39

Sullivan! Love it.

I like Vinny but vince makes me think of mince, and while I like mince, it's not a great vibe for a DS

RoseMartha · 04/06/2021 00:44

I dont like either

Lloyd is a better option for a first name out of the three.

notangelinajolie · 04/06/2021 01:02

Vincent Lloyd
Call him Vince
Sullivan - dreadful name

RedcurrantPuff · 04/06/2021 01:10

Sullivan

DramaAlpaca · 04/06/2021 01:12

Not Vince. Vincent is nice, but Vince isn't. It rhymes with mince: not good.

Sullivan... well, it's just another very common Irish surname turned into a first name, but it's not unpleasant.

ineedaholidaynow · 04/06/2021 01:16

Neither

katy1213 · 04/06/2021 01:48

Vince will be selling knock-off goods on the local market, or maybe running chase-the-lady wiv his mate on the look-out for the cops. Sullivan is down the boozer wiv a pack of pork scratchings.
There seems to be a competition on Mumsnet to choose the ugliest, deservedly forgotten names from the past.

ifigoup · 04/06/2021 04:49

Why not use Sullivan but call him Van for short (like Van Morrison)? Van to my ears has a similar vibe to Vince, but I’m one of those people who would always want a formal name on the birth certificate.

I think if you establish from the start that Van is his “short” name, then people are less likely to use Sully.

Strokethefurrywall · 04/06/2021 12:21

We tried to use Van as a nn for our Sullivan, but it didn’t take because DS1 was 2.5 when Sullivan was born and decided the baby wasn’t a van he was a truck. Which sounded like fuck.

So we reverted back to just calling him Sullivan and friends/teachers call him Sully.

AnxiousAnnie86 · 04/06/2021 12:56

@Penny21xxx I love love love Sullivan! X

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/06/2021 13:22

Vincent is ok-ish .
Sulivan reminds me of the character in Monsters Inc.

FolkSongSweet · 04/06/2021 13:34

I hate the “Irish surname as first name” trend. Willing to bet you have no connection to Ireland. Sullivan as a first name is just awful.

And Vincent is lovely. Just call him that and then he can be Vince for short. Vince alone reminds me of Mince and Vice.

MissingTheMoonlight · 04/06/2021 13:52

Sullivan and I love Sully as a nn. Best of luck OP!

Pemba · 04/06/2021 15:14

Both awful. The full name Vincent is a bit better.

Agree with pps that Sullivan and Vince sound like gang members or grizzled New York cops.
Sullivan is just a surname and will inevitably be shortened to Sully (Monsters Inc).

Are there no other names you like?

RainingZen · 05/06/2021 00:51

Sullivan is quite cool. Sully is a great nickname! Monsters Inc being a firm favourite in my house.

TippledPink · 05/06/2021 02:09

I like Sullivan, NN Sully. Go for it!

Amdone123 · 05/06/2021 02:52

I love Vincent, it's one of my favourite names. Dislike Vince, but Vinny is ok.
I quite like Sullivan. Sully smacks of surly, or sulky, though, so I wouldn't shorten it ( though others probably will).

LaBellina · 05/06/2021 03:32

I like Vince but I like Lloyd even more (as a first name)

Tavannach · 05/06/2021 03:53

Sullivan.

BasiliskStare · 05/06/2021 04:35

I do realise you specifically said Vince rather than Vincent - both of which I like , but just to say we have 2 friends called Vincent - one always goes by Vince - the other always Vincent - so I prefer Vince way more than Sullivan but if it were me ( & I realise it is not ) I would give the name Vincent and let the boy choose as and when. But just my tuppence worth. I suspect a lot would not like my son's name Flowers Grin

BlueDucky · 05/06/2021 06:04

I like Vinnie but not Vince. I'd go for Sullivan out of your options.

TatianaBis · 05/06/2021 10:11

Are you sure? They’re both bottom of the market as first names.

Sullivan is a nice surname.
