Ideas for girls name

Ola9191 · 22/05/2021 21:03

Me and my husband just found out we’re having another little girl, which is great news except we really struggled with a girls name last time! Boys names we seem to agree on, girls not so much!

Names that are on the agreed maybe list so far include Mischa, Isobelle and Alyssa. Our name ends in an A so Alyssa has some alliteration but it goes quite well. Our other daughter is Cassandra (we call her Cassie).

Opinions on these names and any other suggestions would be great!

I love Mischa!

Beyond that I’m struggling for ideas as whilst I like your dd’s name that is quite different to your suggested names which are quite different from each other!

A bit like Mischa:
Alexis
Anoushka
Greta
Dina
Innes
Paloma
Nina
Vita

Long names that can be shortened:
Francesca (nn Frannie)
Vivienne (nn Vivi)
Perdita (nn Perdy)
Cordelia (nn Cordy)
Penelope (nn Penny or Nell)

Other ideas:
Thalia
Loretta
Coralie
Sorrel
Hazel
Marianne

Cassandra/Cassie is lovely

I am not wild about your list this time - Alyssa is ok but not very distinguished compared to Cassandra’s rich history, Mischa just sounds a bit off in English and Isobelle is an odd spelling that will be a massive pain - also there are so many Isabel/las about.

A few thoughts:
Alicia (Ah-LISS-ee-ah)

Serena
Sabrina
Selena / Selene (Sell-ee-nee)
Cecily / Cecilia
Ysella (Ee-zella) - Cornish name
Estella
Adela
Seraphina
Shoshana
Fernanda
Fenella
Athena
Anthea
Santa
Zara
Astra
Marianne
Meredith
Ismene (Iz-May-nee)
Iona / Ione (Eye-oh-nee)
Genevieve (Jen-nah-VEEVE)

Cassandra is so classical and elegant sounding - I'm not sure your 3 choices for DD2 compare very well imo (also they all might have spelling issues compared to Cassandra/Cassie) I'd look for something more classical or perhaps with mythological links again, perhaps:

Larissa
Helena
Thalia
Nerissa
Antonia
Alethea
Susannah
Xanthe
Rosalind

Thanks everyone some great ideas! I’d picked some of these names such as Sienna, Serena and Annabelle but got a ‘no’ from my husband. However last time he initially said no Cassandra then I suggested again a few months later and he said he loved it haha so I’ll try pop them out again!

I love Josephine or actually Josefina / Josie but husband has a weird thing about having no ‘J’ names..our names both start with J and he thinks it will make the post confusing (he is strange) I did point out by the time she gets post it will probably be a paperless society! Also love Lucia or Lucy but we have a dog in the family by Lucy..

I’m liking Alicia so will see what husband thinks :) not too far away from Alyssa so he might like it

I love Mischa and Isobel

I love Cassandra - beautiful name. I really like Alicia as a pp suggested or something like Helena or Lydia I think goes well with Cassandra.

ILoveShula · 23/05/2021 13:40

Mischa - isn't it a boy's name?
Isobelle - dodgy spelling. No.
Alyssa - ok but prefer Melissa.

Unless it's your dog, I wouldn't let a dog in the family stop you calling your daughter Lucia. It's a lovely name and the dog will only be around a small fraction of your daughter's life.

Audrey
Mirren
Leonora
Summer
Morgan
Lucille

Mischa is a boy's name - dim of Mikhail.

I prefer Elyssa to Alyssa & Elyss/Elise is a pretty dim.

Ola9191 · 23/05/2021 16:00

Ah yep it’s originally a boys name in Russia I think but it’s been used for women in the west, e.g Mischa Barton. I think it’s spent Misha in russia?

OP posts:
Ola9191 · 23/05/2021 16:02

I like Elyssa..Alyssa is the name my husbands most keen on at the moment but it’s a nice alternative spelling

OP posts:
TatianaBis · 23/05/2021 16:46

In Russia it's spelt миша so it's a moot point.

But Mischa is the usual spelling in the west.

Ola9191 · 23/05/2021 20:12

@Happenchance we both absolutely love Lucia. The dog is my dads and he’s been trying for a baby with his new wife for many years unsuccessfully.. so I don’t know it just didn’t sit right with me stealing their dogs name. I’m maybe being silly but it made me feel guilty. It’s a shame as we both agree on that one!

@Ola9191 I love Mischa but I'm biased as I have one! Pronounced Meesha, she's a girl :) xx

Such a gorgeous name! What was the reception like? Does she get confused for a girl? My eldest is expecting so I'm harvesting ideas for her Smile

AnxiousAnnie86 · 26/05/2021 07:52

@babbaloushka she's never ever been confused for a boy, tbh I didn't know it was even a unisex name! I got it from a film from a really really cute little girl! She's always getting compliments on her name! X

Was it the one about Hannibal? I heard it in that and loved it!

@babbaloushka yes!!!!
