Where am I going wrong? What type of names should I be looking at?

DH and I can’t agree on a name for a DD. Another boy and the name is sorted, just like DS’s was.

He likes...

Chelsea
Charlotte
Abigail
Georgia
Sophia

I like...

Anthea
Althea
Vita
Irina
Adelpha
Eva
Serena
Selena

These names that I like seem very different to his choices.

What should we be searching for into Google, are the names I like considered unusual? And are his just classic girls names?

I don’t like any of his beyond one that I can’t use for personal reasons. He hates everything I’ve listed there

We already had a Grace and a Athena. Sadly passed away so our most loved names now used Flowers

We have a DS called Vincent

I think your DH likes more classic names in an 80s style, whereas your picks are more ephemeral and modern. So I would try to fine something which is between the two styles.

Maybe try Googling two of his choices along with two of yours, and see what comes up? It could be anything from a newspaper article to the cast on a theatre programme, but as long as there are other names on there too, there might be some you both like.

I've just tried it with a random two from both your lists, and have found

Holly
Greta
Jasmine
Pearl
Summer
Autumn
Stella
Phoebe

emmathedilemma · 13/05/2021 11:54

I agree with @PassGo that your DH is living in the '80's, has he never met any girls other than the ones he went to school with??
I'm not really sure what theme your choices follow, you say you don't want overused and popular names but Eva and Grace are right up there in that category and I think Anthea is quite dated.
Vincent is a bit dated verging on cool so I think you need go along those lines......I'm just not sure what!

CallMyBucks · 13/05/2021 11:56

I don’t like Stella but it’s always suggested if I mention that we have a Vincent, and next to each other they definitely match! It’s always suggested without fail. I don’t dislike it but it does remind me of the beer, which is nicknamed the wife beater where I’m from ConfusedGrin

Am I going mad or is this your third thread running! Not telling you off, just surprised, do they really produce such different results? You’ve got the sister for Vincent, the Sophie/Sophia one, & now this one.

daisypond · 13/05/2021 12:03

Your names are definitely more unusual. Eva is the most popular of them. I like them a lot. Your DH’s are very popular classics- except Chelsea, which doesn’t fit at all -some of which are dated now.

cbatomove · 13/05/2021 12:04

It seems like he's just listed the names of girls he went to school with whereas yours are a bit more of a mix bag. The only ones I'd use are: Sophia, Eva, Selena.

How about:
Lara
Willow
Holly
Darcey
Lucy
Hazel
Callie
Eloise
Louisa
Ruby
Cassie
Celeste
Rosa

I think in the end you may just have to compromise and go with a name you both kinda like rather than a name one of you can't stand. Keeping my fingers crossed for you that there's a name out there you both love!

LadyCatStark · 13/05/2021 12:30

Well you clearly like names that end in -a so I’d Google those and see if there’s any you both like.

TempsPerdu · 13/05/2021 13:05

Your DH’s choices are definitely more mainstream popular, although mostly slightly dated now (especially Chelsea). Yours are a mixed bag of super common (Eva, Grace) and much more unusual. I really like Vita from your list (was on our shortlist for DD) but less keen on some of the others, like Anthea and Adelpha.

The names website Nameberry has a function where you type in the names you like and it gives a list of similar options. Maybe give that a go? We found it useful for ideas, although it does have a slightly American slant. Also maybe check out the ONS stats to see if you can find a ‘sweet spot’ name that’s neither too common nor unusual: www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/livebirths/datasets/babynamesenglandandwalesbabynamesstatisticsgirls (Tab 6 has names beyond the top 100)

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/05/2021 13:10

We went through the whole ONS names list and made note of any we liked. Then the other person gave their opinions on them.

ILoveShula · 13/05/2021 15:25

Chelsea - dated and not in keeping with the others
Sophia - nice but too popular
Anthea - I don't like the thea bit
Althea- I don't like the thea bit
Adelpha - sounds like Adolf
Eva - overused
Irina - eastern european sounding
Selena - Will get Serena/Selina

Shorten the list and you get similarity:
Vita - short for Victoria
Serena
Charlotte
Abigail
Georgia

Stevearnottsbeard · 13/05/2021 16:50

Nicoladunsire I thought the same thing, thought I'd accidentally clicked back onto the last thread!! 😂 😂

How about
Verity
Faith
Clarissa
Hope

Stevearnottsbeard · 13/05/2021 16:52

That was meant to be @nicolaDunsire
Complete fail sorry 🤦🏻‍♀️

toastofthetown · 13/05/2021 19:25

Have you considered using the name app Kinder? It presents you with a wide selection of names and you can each swipe for names you like. It will let you know when you have matched. Might be a different way to find names you both like.

finallychangedmyusername · 13/05/2021 19:41

I'd describe his style as classic/perenially popular, albeit slightly dated(80s/90s).

And yours as quite stately/serious/no nonsense.

Meeting somewhere in the middle...

Katherine
Rachel
Josephine
Leah
Lucinda

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 14/05/2021 00:12

You both have 2 "ee- ah" ending names on each of your lists - have you considered something in between his more popular/well known choices and your less popular/well known ones? Something "classic" but not top 100 like Julia, Lydia, Claudia, Antonia, Victoria (nn Vita) etc. Or perhaps something more unusual - but with a more popular nn your DH might prefer eg. Cassia (Cassie), Lilia (Lily), Aurelia (Rae) etc

CallMyBucks · 14/05/2021 09:19

I absolutely love Lydia but DH hates it!

Like Antonia but definitely not nn like Toni or Annie, so that’s out too.

Can’t stand Claudia. DH in agreement with that. And we both dislike all the others

But I love the suggestion of Cassia (Cassie), and hadn’t thought of it at all. It’s really quite lovely. I will ask and report back, thank you very much

I think the names you like sound quite Greek in style? So maybe worth having a look at Greek names and seeing if any meet his classic / known / (80s vibe!) criteria!!

Certainly if you like Cassia, Lydia and Anthea... how about just Thea?

Other Greek (style / origin) but well used / known ideas could be:
Penelope
Phoebe
Sofia
Chloe
Dorothea (Dotty is cute!)
Elena
Anastasia
Alexandra
Amara
Callie
Tessa
Helena
Daphne

Though it seems you like those ending 'a' the best? Think the Greek thing would be worth a look for you though!

daisypond · 14/05/2021 10:01

Laura? I think it’s a great name.

Pedalpushers · 14/05/2021 11:02

Just FYI, I know several Antonias and not one of them has a shorter nickname. One straight up tells people she doesn't like being called Toni.

ChairmansReserve · 14/05/2021 11:18

Why do you keep posting multiple threads with the same question asked in slightly different ways?

NoSquirrels · 14/05/2021 11:23

@CallMyBucks

I agree with PP that there’s a Classical Greek vibe in what you like.

Angelina
Anastasia
Ariana
Cassandra
Helena
Iris
Melanie
Phoebe

If he likes Chelsea, and you like Lydia, how about Adelaide? To me it has a similar vibe.

SE13Mummy · 14/05/2021 11:45

Vincent is a Latin name so maybe there's another Latin name you both like?

Cecily
Claudia
Felicity
Flora
Florence
Juno
Laura
Laurel
Louise
Lucy
Maria
Mirabel
Nova
Pearl
Poppy
Rosa
Ruby
Unable
Verity
Viola
Violet

I think in your situation with such different taste, one of the baby name tinder style apps may be a good shout. I tried it and was pleasantly surprised by how many matches we got, as we superficially seem to have very different taste.
