I want to change my sons name

I've namechanged as I'm going to say his name so this will be outing.

My son is 5 months old today and I split with his dad when I was pregnant. We didn't really have a list of names and me and him weren't really 'friends' when I gave birth as I found out he had cheated on me before I gave birth. So I named DS Dominic and I now don't think it suits him and it was a rushed decision. I want to change his name but I'm not sure if family etc will judge me as he's had his name for 5 months.

Me and his dad are now good friends and he sees DS regularly but he said it's up to me. I just couldn't find a name that suited him and I was kind of rushed by family who kept asking what his name was.

You can easily change his name up to
12 months. At 5 months he probably won't recognise his name yet, so the sooner the better. Do you have a name you prefer?

Yes you can change his name fairly easily up to 12 months. I did similar and I know it seems like a massive deal but actually 5 months is such a short time and everyone will quickly forget! I spent ages stressing over it and actually got quite low about the whole thing, but it was such a relief when I did change it. And now it doesn’t bother me at all that I changed it! You could keep Dominic as a middle name and just add on the first name. Do you have a name you prefer? You could practice calling him a new name for a couple of days and see if it suits him better.

Do it, you can get a new birth certificate up to 12 months old. I would do it sooner rather than later.

Do you know what you want to change it to and is it something you feel like you'd be happier with? If so then it's easy enough done and he won't know at 5 months.

He's your son so it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks.

Yes, but spend a couple weeks calling him by the new name so you’re sure.

Do you have a new name? If yes, then change it.

Chilldonaldchill · 13/05/2021 22:19

Dominic's lovely.
But I also think it's fine to change it if you really want to.

Happycat1212 · 13/05/2021 22:29

I would change it but that’s because I’ve always hated Dominic/Dom better to do it now whilst under 12 months

You could call him the rather cool Nico as a nn rather than Dominic/Dom? But having said that, if you've found a name you really love instead, I don't think it's a huge deal to change it at 5 months - people will soon get used to calling him the new name.
