Please help find a lovely middle name to go with Margaret/Maggie. We have a one syllable surname that starts with 'M'. Thanks!

Any family names that you might like to honour?

That's what we did.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/05/2021 22:22

If there's no family names you like, I'd be tempted to go for another M name for the cool factor (but maybe not May!)- if it doesn't sound too tongue twister with your surname. Madeleine, Maria/Mia, Marianne, Maeve (too close to May?), Melissa?

Alternatively since Margaret is quite strong sounding and traditional you could consider going for something very popular currently/more "girly" sounding instead for the middle - Lily, Sophie/Sophia, Olivia, Ella, Freya, Emily/Emilia, Eva, Isabelle, etc

Some great suggestions here - I'm leaning towards something with one or two syllables. I quite like Lucy. I think the pp who mentioned something soft as Margaret is quite strong is right. Any thoughts on something botanical maybe?

I'm not sure whether I love or hate the idea of having an 'M' middle name! What's everyone's thoughts on this?

Margaret Lily sounds nice if you want a botanical flavour
I’m not keen on the 3 Ms but I’m pretty conservative!!

MyMagicStars · 10/05/2021 16:10

I like the three M’s! Maggie May is gorgeous. I think it would look smart

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/05/2021 18:04

Me again! I think the 3 M's looks cool written down, but the middle name would have to be something with distinct sounds to Margaret and your surname so it's not too difficult to say.

If want something botanical then Margaret Lily works beautifully imo - soft sounding and currently popular, it contrasts nicely with Margaret.

Of the other popular botanicals - Rose is too commonplace imo (plus Princess Margaret was famously Margaret Rose), and Daisy is already another nn for Margaret. Poppy is a bit cutesy, and Iris also quite strong sounding like Margaret to me - but Jasmine could be a possibility? Has quite a feminine feel (also a Disney Princess). The initials MJ would also give her yet another nn option!.

Thank you @Flymetothestars - I've had my doubts! Your comment's reassuring Smile It's to honour my very loved Grandma, but I am unsure about what reactions will be like...

Some good thoughts here @IamnotwhouthinkIam - I like Iris but I did also think it may be a bit too strong when paired with Margaret.

Our daughter was almost a Maggie and she would have been Maggie Arabella. Agree with PP that with Margaret/Maggie, a softer middle name is needed and I think with your one syllable surname you could have a slightly more elaborate middle name.

OlivesTree · 11/05/2021 11:39

Maggie Clementine. Smile

I know one and love it.

MindyStClaire · 11/05/2021 11:44

Our DD2 has a first name beginning with M, a McM surname and middle name Margaret after family. It flows nicely in her case and we've had a lot of compliments, but you have to get the right names for the alliteration to be nice and not twee in my opinion.
