River for a girl

Would this be strange? It seems to be mostly used as a boys name but it's unisex right?

I know of three Rivers and all are girls.

HarleyQuinn21 · 08/05/2021 13:23

The only River I know is a girl

nevernotstruggling · 08/05/2021 13:36

River is unisex it's a great name

KirstenBlest · 08/05/2021 13:47

A bit wet.

Astronaut8 · 08/05/2021 13:48

It’s unisex, I love it for a girl!

GlacindaTheTroll · 08/05/2021 13:48

Fine for Whovians

Tardis
ILoveStickers · 08/05/2021 13:49

As in River Song. Definitely unisex.

firstimemamma · 08/05/2021 13:57

I dislike the name but just wanted to say that until this thread I had no idea it was a unisex name! I thought it was just for girls.

M0rT · 08/05/2021 14:01

The only Rivers I know are River Phoenix and a (female) character from Firefly.
So unisex for me.
I like it, loved the Firefly character!

sarah13xx · 08/05/2021 15:05

Yes, love it! If you haven’t heard of Fleur de Force she has a YouTube channel and her little girl is called River. They call her Riv a lot as a nickname. Someone on here suggested it for a boy and I found that more strange as I presumed it was more for a girl when I heard her using it

Amdone123 · 08/05/2021 15:13

Taught 1. A girl. Spelt Riva ( pronounced River).

MooseMoose · 08/05/2021 15:17

I know one, a boy, but I think it suits a girl too, in a similar way to Rowan. I like it.

Flymetothestars · 08/05/2021 16:58

I love it. It's unisex for sure.

Pedalpushers · 10/05/2021 13:59

River Song from Doctor Who is a woman and she is awesome. I know Fleur de Force got quite a bit of stick for naming her daughter River but I quite like it.

VenusClapTrap · 10/05/2021 14:39

I thought it was a boy’s name, but I haven’t come across many.

Pemba · 10/05/2021 15:07

There's River Phoenix (male) and River Song (female, although fictional!).

I'd say probably unisex though.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/05/2021 15:24

There have been a couple of female River's in popular Sci -fi/Fantasy programmes (over the last couple of decades) so some of the younger generation will associate River = girls name. People 40 plus will perhaps more likely think of River Phoenix, so more of a boys name.

Really, unlike Willow which has strongly pulled to the girls side, River is used almost equally on both sexes (more like Rowan is in some countries). It's a lovely sounding name btw!

Palavah · 10/05/2021 15:45

Nn Flo?

countrypunk · 10/05/2021 23:00

OP, I think it's gorgeous. It's going on my list Smile

lakesidelife · 10/05/2021 23:05

I associate it with Dr Who and therefore a female.

FurrySlipperBoots · 10/05/2021 23:41

I always think of Rivers from My Dog Skip so for me it's more female than unisex.

RedcurrantPuff · 10/05/2021 23:42

I quite like it

Not strange at all. Defs unisex.

ChelseaCat · 11/05/2021 10:09

In terms of a male or female name, my LO has a traditionally male name but has unfortunately been used more for females recently. It can be a bit frustrating to be honest, although I wouldn’t assume River was a boy or a girl. Personally I don’t get the love for this name at all 🤷‍♀️ But if you love it OP then you should use it
