Name for my girl

Dutchmom1984 · 01/05/2021 07:15

Hello! I didn’t think it would be this hard but I can’t decide on a name for my little girl.
Ideally, I want it to be a name that can be pronounced in many countries, especially in Europe and the Americas where many of my relatives live. I am Dutch/Chilean with Jewish roots and it would be lovely to have some connection to that but it’s not a must. I have a little son named Oscar :-). A name to came to me so easily!

My list so far:
Alba
Zora (but apparently zorra is slang for slut in Spanish :-()
Kaia or Caia
Romy or Romi
Rena or Reina (means queen in Spanish so not sure)
Lucy (my grandma is named Luz)
Raisa or Reisa
Alice
Zara - but association with the clothing store might be an issue?

As a middle name I like May (month where many important women in our families where born) June or Jo (after a good friend)

Any suggestions? Thank you so much!

I like Caia, it looks pretty. I'm not so keen on the others, sorry.

Caia Jo/May
Reina Jo/May
Romy May/June/Jo
Lucy Jo/May
Reisa June/May

are all lovely :)

I also love Adella (pronounced A-day-la) and Elayna (pronounced E-lay-na).

AnyaMoondial · 01/05/2021 07:47

Zara June is fabulous.

Amdone123 · 01/05/2021 07:49

I love Elena, too.

From your list, I like Alba, Romy ( met a Romany once. Love it) and Lucy. I've always loved Lucy ( and Lucia), and the link to your Grandma is lovely.

Oscar and Lucia. Perfect.

EvilOnion · 01/05/2021 07:50

Ooh Lucia is lovely too Smile

Thank you for your help.
I like Lucia, Alana! Hannah and Noa too but already have a a cousin named Noa.
Zara June I like as well but my bf is not a fan of either :-(.
Leaning towards Caia now but afraid the spelling might raise some eyebrows....Kaia is more common but I just love the letter C.

Zara is lovely 😊

rainbowstardrops · 01/05/2021 09:11

Caia looks prettier than Kaia. One of my DC has a name beginning with a C but is commonly spelt with a K in this country (traditional spelling is with a C in it's country of origin) but I preferred the C spelling too!
I have spent years saying " XXX with a C' though! 😂

EvilOnion · 01/05/2021 09:16

I would say go for it, if it's not a very unusual name then people will just ask to double check.

My daughter has a C or K name and it's never caused a problem - i don't know why but K looks harsh to me.

whattodo2019 · 01/05/2021 09:18

I'm afraid I only like, these names are gorgeous.
Lucy
Alice
Zara

Marvelina · 01/05/2021 09:31

Hannah is gorgeous. Lucia is lovely too. Congratulations on your little girl!

Emma
Anna/bel/la
Isabel/la
Julia
Marianne/a
Claudia
Sophia / Sofia
Maria
Alexandra
Sara/h
Caroline/a
Francesca
Helen/a
Rebecca
Serena

Basically any fairly phonetic name with a long history.

I think you’d be better off with Luisa or Louisa than Lucy.

Zara is OK.
I don’t now how easy Alice is to pronounce for non English speakers
The rest of them are quite faddy and I don’t think will travel well.

Dutchmom1984 · 01/05/2021 11:08

Thanks again everyone!
I do love classical names but many of them feel a bit frilly or old fashioned.
Emma is lovely but overly used. She would be Emma number 4 in her class where I live.
Luisa was on my list but now also feels too girly. I like it to be a bit more modern and timeless, like Zara. Alice I love but perhaps more how it looks written than pronounced.
Will be different everywhere she goes.

I agree on the letter K feeling/sounding/looking harsh

If the month of May is important to you, why not use May or Maya as a first name? Maya especially is very international.

Otherwise I second some of pp suggestions - Hannah, Anna, Julia, Sara, Claudia, Louisa, Elena, Alicia are used in a lot of countries.

OnlyToWin · 02/05/2021 15:38

Jessica May would be lovely.
It has the same “sc” sound as Oscar, so they sound good together and also has Jewish links.

JemimaJoy · 02/05/2021 15:53

Alba or Romy are my favourites! Middle name June 😍

Dutchmom1984 · 02/05/2021 18:29

Thank you for all the great suggestions!

My list so far:
Alba - I think of Jane's abuella in Jane the vrigin
Zora - very pretty, was on my long list
Kaia or Caia - love! Was a top one but unfortunately we have a niece with that name, so vetoed it. We were going to use the spelling Kaiya, so that's an option too.
Romy or Romi - Don't love
Rena or Reina - I like. Also love Raina.
Lucy - It's ok
Raisa or Reisa - Not a fan
Alice - Not a fan
Zara - Pretty but quite common
