Thoughts on my long(ish) Girls list

Piptastic · 26/04/2021 22:06

Planning on TTC later in the year and already love thinking about possible names. Possibly too early to get DP excited about names (as I'm not even pregnant!) but I love thinking about it, as I know lots of you on here do too.

The girls names I like, after many years of thinking about it are as follows. What are your thoughts on;

Elena (pronounced "Eh-LEN-ah)

Elle

Emma

Emmy

Elodie

Julietta

All thoughts good or bad very welcomed.

Beautiful names. You can't go wrong with any of them. I almost called my daughter Elodie and I still love that name. But I love all the other E sounding names you have too. Weirdly I ended up calling her Aurelia, thinking we could call her Elle, Ellie, Elia... But her nickname is Rae! She also has the middle name Ellaline, after her grandmother.

Also Julietta, how unique yet familiar sounding. I love it.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 26/04/2021 22:11

Are you only thinking about having a girl?

For what’s worth I think Elena is nice, but I can’t imagine thinking about names that early on!

DotDotDotDotDot · 26/04/2021 22:55

Elena is my favourite on your list.
Elle, Ellie and Ella are so dull in my opinion.
Emma is nice, simple classic name.
Emmy seems like a nickname, could be short for Emmeline.
Elodie I like, although sounds nicer with a French accent.
Julietta seems overly fussy, love Juliet though.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/04/2021 23:07

I love Elena but El-ay-na rather than Ellen-er.
Ellie is nice and sweet.
Elle is boring.
I detest Ella.
Emma See Ellie. Although I'd say Emma is more classy.
I don't really have any opinion on Emmy.
I don't like Elodie.
I can't stand those Etta names. What did Julie eat.

I must ask those what makes you so certain its going to be a girlConfused

Elena. Sophisticated and international.

Elle. It just means 'she' in French. Not good, like a generic female name.

Emma. Love it, simple classic and such a long history. My favourite name.

Emmy. A diminutive, not a standalone name.

Elodie. Beautiful, but like all French names it sounds best in a French accent.

Julietta. Very pretty.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/04/2021 13:13

Elena will likely be said the Hispanic/European way "Ee - lay -na" , even in the UK. If you want "Eh- len -uh" then use classic Eleanor (most people don't seem to pronounce the -or ).

Elle and Emmy are too insubstantial for me - but cute nn's for Eleanor/Elena/Helena and Emma/Emily/Emmeline. Actually Emmeline might be a great option for you since it combines 3 of your fave sounding names (Emma/Emmy/Elle) in one.

Elodie is pretty and Julietta nice but very Italian. Elodie is fairly well used in the UK, but I might be tempted to stick with the lovely "English" Juliet unless you have Italian links for Julietta (as I think she might often be asked about it).

TatianaBis · 27/04/2021 13:23

Elodie.

PrudenceDictates · 28/04/2021 10:26

They're fine, not too exciting, except Elodie...
although it's always popular on here, I really dislike it.
It sounds silly without a french accent, pretentious with (unless actually French) but most of all it makes me think of elodea, which is pond weed.

diddlediddle · 28/04/2021 22:11

Elena will (correctly) be pronounced Eh-lay-nah.

If you want it pronounced Eh-len-a then spell it Eleanor just like everyone else! Elenna would work phonetically but is ugly.

Emmy is a (wet) nickname not a full name for a grown woman.

Julietta, Emma are nice. Elle and Élodie are quite twee for my taste.

StevieNix · 28/04/2021 22:22

I like Elena (but only pronounced E-lay-na)
But Emmy is probably my favourite from your list.

partyatthepalace · 29/04/2021 08:29

Emma (a classic) or Julietta

Too many Eleanors, Elle is a nn, Emmy a kiddy nn, Elodie is ok but a bit faddy/cutsey like Amelie

Santatizer · 29/04/2021 21:44

Eleanor and Elena (the OP's way) are not the same pronunciation. Elenna is (I think) how the OP would pronounce it, so Eh-LEN-ah not EH-len-er).I actually know an Elena with exactly this pronunciation. I like it. Not keen on the rest of your list and especially dislike Emmy.

lovelsa · 30/04/2021 10:25

I'm not a huge fan of "Elle" names, they seem overdone (Isabelle, Belle, Elle, Ella, etc)...and that's coming from an Elsa haha So that kinda rules out Elle and Elena for me from your list.

I love Elodie and Emma (and you could always use Emmy as a nickname for Emma).

Not a fan of Julietta.

Synchrony · 30/04/2021 19:08

I ADORE Julietta. I so wanted to use it but it didn't work with our surname. It's just beautiful.
