Sibling for Lucy?

I’m only 18 and a bit weeks, but we really struggled deciding on said Lucy’s name, so i think it will take us (me) from now until full term to make our minds up!

We hadn’t found out if we were having a boy or a girl, so we had sort of shortlists for both, but then she didn’t seem to look like any of the girl names (she is strawberry blonde and they all seemed like dark haired girls!) so we decided on Lucy (which hadn’t been on the shortlist) in a hurry in the end when we were discharged from hospital, mainly because my parents were getting antsy about her not having a name after 3 days 🙄

I do like the name and it suits her, but really I would have liked to choose something very slightly more interesting, although still classic and not likely to date too much. I also feel like I now need to go for something super conventional for number 2 otherwise it’ll seem weird!

Our surname is a very common one but is 3 syllables, so I’m a bit wary of longer first names to avoid giving the poor child a mouthful to learn when they’re little.

I am probably going to find out the sex this time, but would love some ideas to be going on with. I’ll list some names I kind of like below, but I’m totally open to suggestions- I think part of the problem last time was the we didn’t really love any particular names, just liked quite a few. Also it seems like such a huge responsibility to name a child!

Felix
Hector (I know this is divisive, but my dads side of the family was Scottish and this was my grandpa’s name - I like it a lot but not sure I dare really use it!)
Angus (was Hector’s brother)
Hamish (an ex colleague used this as she thought it worked in the nursery and the boardroom, and I can see her point)
James
Henry
George (last three too boring?)

Annabel
Clementine
Beatrice
Clara
Sophie
Violet/Viola
Ivy
Ottilie (but possible silly nickname with our surname)
Margot (Lucy’s middle name is Margaret after my mum, so might be odd?)
Cecelia/Celia (patron saint of music, which is significant to me)
Constance
Nancy
Flora
Iris
Sylvie (almost used this last time but chickened out)
Eva
Philippa (Pippa)
Claudia

Lucy and Flora is perfect @CaptainWentworth

CaptainWentworth · 10/08/2021 22:19

Thanks all Flowers I do need a bit of reassurance about these things.

Also thanks for the other suggestions toolazytothinkofausername - they are all very pretty too; Zoë is still on the long list also!

Hi @CaptainWentworth wondering what name you went with in the end? We are considering Flora and Lucy as the middle name!

CaptainWentworth · 19/02/2022 15:37

hi @Illyria17 - I had completely forgotten about this thread! We did go for Flora Beatrix in the end, and we’ve had lots of lovely comments about the name Flora and how people would have liked to use it (mostly relative who only have boys). It really suits her and I couldn’t imagine using any other name now.

DH came across late 20s Flora in the course of his work (doctor) which assuaged our worries about a professional adult with the name! Oddly enough it turned out that she has a sister called Lucy as well.

Hope all goes well for you

I wouldn’t have chosen Flora with Lucy.. some of your other options were much nicer.. Especially Sophie.. x

35andThriving · 22/02/2022 08:55

Flora Beatrix is gorgeous. Congratulations! Smile

Kgutdfn · 22/02/2022 10:47

Lucy and Lara
Lucy and Luke

I just wanted to say I really like Lucy and it doesn't seem to be as super popular as all the Lucia type names going on. Sometimes the plainer names can be more stand out at the moment as everything seems quite in favour of longer more elaborate names at the moment.

Flora is great and I liked Viola too on your list if you want something similar to Violet but not quite.

I prefer Anna to Annabel as I think it's a beautiful name without needing the extras.

35andThriving · 22/02/2022 12:14

The baby's been named. She's called Flora.

Jumpalicious · 22/02/2022 22:51

Flora Bea is lovely. Works very well with Lucy too. congrats op.

DuchessOfSausage · 23/02/2022 21:16

I like your boys' names but not many of your girls' names.
Lucy is great

I'd probably choose Hector because of the connection.

Annabel - ok
Clementine - don't like
Beatrice - ok
Clara - don't like
Sophie - like
Violet/Viola - ok
Ivy - don't like

Ottilie (but possible silly nickname with our surname) - don't like
Margot (Lucy’s middle name is Margaret after my mum, so might be odd?) - not keen
Cecelia/Celia (patron saint of music, which is significant to me) - Cecilia is a better spelling
Constance - nice
Nancy - like but a bit rhymey with Lucy
Flora - nice
Iris - ok
Sylvie (almost used this last time but chickened out) - don't like
Eva - don't like
Philippa (Pippa) - ok
Claudia - not keen

Flora or Sophie

DollyParton2 · 24/02/2022 07:28

My favourite girls by far from your list is Violet.
I like Felix and Hamish too. Have you considered Lewis or Fraser both also popular Scottish names?

DollyParton2 · 24/02/2022 07:29

Sorry just seen your update! Congrats.

Illyria17 · 25/02/2022 20:03

@CaptainWentworth Beautiful combination of names! Congratulations 💖

Redfin17 · 15/03/2023 22:25

@CaptainWentworth just stumbled on this thread and really want to know what you called your baby? I had a Lucy in 2019 and an Annabel in 2021!

She said in the thread that she called her Flora Beatrix

Justinripley · 16/03/2023 07:16

Love Hector, Angus and George. I guess the latter is a bit ‘boring’ to some as it’s popular but it is timeless and I always think that these names remain popular because they’re lovely.

For the girls, I love Clara, Ivy and Iris. The rest like Ottilie, Margot etc feel quite faddy and I think age badly.

Sylvie is lovely but it’s very unpopular in France as it’s outdated and not trendy again yet.

One of my closest friends is Cecilia - she loves her name and is mostly just Cec. Her dad isn’t from here and says ‘Chechelia’ which sounds fancy and cool (to me anyway!)

I like Eve and Flora.

CaptainWentworth · 16/03/2023 14:31

@Redfin17 yes we went with Flora Beatrix - she’s 18 months now and turning into a proper little character. I’m sure other names would have been good as well but we are happy with this one.

I love Hamish and Angus from your boy names. The only one I'm not keen on is felix (cat food), and would suggest Rory?

I was going to suggest Nancy to go with Lucy before I saw your girls list, think they sound great together. I like all your girl names aside from ottilie, cecilia and constance (bit too posh for me.) Love names like Violet and Ivy.

mumonherphone · 17/03/2023 19:25

Sorry just seen it's an old thread gah. Congratulations on your daughter.

fruitandfibreg · 17/03/2023 19:26

@CaptainWentworth such a beautiful name!

justanothermummma · 17/03/2023 19:27

I love Constance (Connie)!

justanothermummma · 17/03/2023 19:28

Just realised how old this thread was!

Ihavehadenoughalready · 18/03/2023 04:26

I like Cecilia, but worry nick could be CeCe which is too similar to Lucy.

Celia, though, sounds nice.

Don't really like any of your boy names. James is ok but I can't stand it nicked to Jim or Jimmy. Felix is alright but I always think of the cartoon cat.

Ian, maybe? Evan? Sean?
