Charlotte? bit boring or nice?

Any thoughts on Charlotte? I like it as a name itself, and like Charlie/Lottie as nicknames.
Is it a bit boring though? Seems to be fairly consistently in top 20 names. Do you know many babies called it recently ?

Bit bland. I had 7 in my year group at primary school.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/04/2021 18:29

Classic rather than boring imo - it just happens to be fairly popular at the moment, but at least it doesn't have a trendy sound. It's not quite as timeless as say Elizabeth or Alice but it's been regularly used over the decades and suits all ages.

One of the benefits of Charlotte is that as well as some cool namesakes (like feminist writers Bronte, Perkins Gilman etc), there's a variety of nn's so she can make it her own - Charlie, Carly, Lottie and Lotte ("Lot -teh"), but she could also conceivably use Callie and even Carrie too.

I really like Charlotte but doubt I'd call my dd it because I know far too many Charlottes myself and I want something a bit more unique

Spied · 10/04/2021 18:31

Agree with others that it's nice but boring.

SquigglePigs · 10/04/2021 18:33

Maybe it isn't the most exciting name on the world but it's beautiful and classic. It was on our shortlist for DD and we went with something similarly classic. I love it.

toastofthetown · 10/04/2021 18:34

It's both - a lot of names fit into the nice but boring caregory. Charlotte has been popular for so long it can hardly be described as exciting. Saying that, it's a fine name and there are some advantages to popular names, not least that they are generally well liked. If it's too boring for isn't something that Mumsnet can answer really.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/04/2021 18:34

I like it

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 10/04/2021 18:34

It’s a lovely name but unusable in our area because it’s a very downmarket name here. It’s in Gracie-Mae territory.

Warrickdaviesasplates · 10/04/2021 18:35

I find it to be a very faceless name. Anyone could be called Charlotte, the name doesn't stand out or conjure any sort of interest or imagination.

I'm lucky that I have a fairly distinctive surname as nobody ever remembers Charlotte but they remember Charlotte Surname.

I suppose some people don't mind having a name like that but I have actively tried to call my children more unusual names as I always dislike how my name is just... nice and boring and non memorable.

MissBPotter · 10/04/2021 18:36

I’m not sure it’s a benefit for the child to have an exciting name! Sometimes it can be a burden for life! I like Charlotte and it’s on our list for baby no. 3 if it’s a girl. I do know quite a few my age though which is putting me off a tiny bit.

GintyMcGinty · 10/04/2021 18:40

Lovely. A classic that has stood the test of time.

ooohhh! What area is this? Thanks for comments. I do like it, but a top 20 name may be a little too popular for me, my other child's name is around 120/130 most popular. Maybe use it as a middle name, will think on it!

Lovely classic name.
A name doesn't have to stand out. Your personality will.

SavannahLands · 11/04/2021 11:47

It's a Classic, my youngest Daughter has it as a middle name, mainly because Lottie would have Rymed with our Surname!

I dislike fashion names simply because they give an indication to a person's age once they are long gone from the popularity list.
I have a Cousin called Paige, she hates it for that reason, and uses her middle name instead. My eldest Daughter dislikes the fact that she married a man with just about the most common Surname in the Uk, and that I gave her the then Fashionable most popular late 70s Girls name combination!

She's known by her friends as a Nickname now, but official forms and ID listings can be a nightmare!

PollyThePony · 11/04/2021 11:49

I also think it's both! Nice and a bit boring. Lottie I think can be a bit Gracie-Mae, as a pp says. But probably depends on where you live.

Similar vibe; how about Emma or Alice?

MyCatHatesOtherCats · 11/04/2021 11:55

Lovely, classic name with good nickname potential. Not boring at all!

Don’t be put off by top 20 popularity - both my DC have names in the 20-30 range. With DC1, I know one other a year or so older who’s a family friend’s child, and have met one in a playground. I know someone from work whose child has the same name as DC2. That’s it.

The names I know multiples of include Thomas, Louis, Louie and Emily. That’s about it.

daffodilsandprimroses · 11/04/2021 11:58

It’s one of my favourite girls names - I’ve only ever known lovely Charlotte’s.

KirstenBlest · 11/04/2021 13:34

Classic. Fairly safe but nice.

Changingwiththetimes · 11/04/2021 13:39

My sister used it because where she lives (abroad) it's not common, and I was like 'oh no it's way too popular'. But there's no Charlottes in my son's year, but there is one in my daughter's year. Freya and Ruby are more popular here, there's one in every year it seems.

VanillaAndOrange · 11/04/2021 14:00

One of my all-time favourites and I have a very nice relative with that name who has made me like it even more.

jessstan2 · 11/04/2021 16:58

I've never known anyone called 'Gracie-Mae', honestly.

Charlotte is a name that will never cause embarrassment to a child at school. It's lovely.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 11/04/2021 17:01

Lovely, classic name. If it has to be shortened, then I prefer Lotte to Charlie. It’s in the same realm as Elizabeth, Alice, Clara.

MadeOfStarStuff · 11/04/2021 19:22

Beautiful and classic

LittleGwyneth · 11/04/2021 19:28

I think it's an unselfish name - giving your child a lovely classic name which isn't about showing off how different you are.

Ejm02 · 11/04/2021 21:58

Lovely!
I like Lottie for short!
