Name suddenly seems to be everywhere

There is a name I have loved for years but dh has vetoed it with both our daughters. However, about a year ago he had a change of heart and said if we have another girl we can use it. Anyway, baby due in October but now this name seems to be everywhere, and I don’t want her having a common name!

Is it bad I’m kinda hoping the baby is a boy so I don’t have the dilemma!

It might just seem everywhere because you’re looking for it. Like as soon as I was prenant every other woman I saw seemed to be pregnant.
Look at one of those baby name charts to see if the name is actually rising or falling in terms of popularity.
It’s possible that you have a mini boom of the name in your immediate area, but 5 miles down the road it’s much less common.

I’m a big believer in calling your own baby what you want to call it. It’s daft to be too influenced by other people.

Presumably it’s popular because it’s a nice name.

There are four Alfie’s in my year two class of 25 children. They are all very separate people and if someone says Alfie has lost his pencil or Alfie got all his spellings right I can pretty much tell which Alfie is the subject.

I would use it anyway. Maybe you could give her a more unusual middle name to balance it?

Violetlavenders · 09/04/2021 16:05

Why not wait untypical find out the gender?

Violetlavenders · 09/04/2021 17:28

Sorry until you (find out the gender)

Sall23 · 09/04/2021 21:10

What's the name? Maybe people here can let you know whether they know of loads of little girls with the same name?

Sexnotgender · 09/04/2021 21:22

What’s the name?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/04/2021 21:26

Yanbu not to give the name.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 09/04/2021 21:30

It’s probably something called NLP (neuro linguistic programming) the name is probably not more popular but as you are focussed on it your noticing when it is mentioned / seeing it on credits as your brain is now programmed to do that.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 09/04/2021 21:31

So just call them what you want to call them. There will generally be someone else with the same name no matter how uncommon it is.

toastofthetown · 09/04/2021 21:32

If you are concerned about popularity the Darkgreener website is really useful for visualising if a name is rising or falling in popularity across the country. In general though, name trends tend to be quite localised. As you already have two children, you will have an idea about what names people are using in your area by hearing names in parks, playgroups, families of your girls' friends.

I'm also very curious as to what the name is.

Skysblue · 09/04/2021 21:35

This is a known thing. All the thinking that led you to that name also led other people to it at the same time. My mum picked an ‘unheard of’ name for my brother - 2 kids in his class had thr same name 🤣

diddlediddle · 09/04/2021 23:33

Yeah it happens all the time. Everyone thinks they're being original at the same time. If you'd used it first time you would probably have hit the trend bang on, but now you're a bit behind. If you say the name you'll get feedback as to how zeitgeisty it really is. Bit clickbaity not to tbh!!

ChristmasSexyTime · 09/04/2021 23:41

Happens all the time. Lillys, millys, mollys... All the flower names - Jasmine, Daisy etc. Old fashioned names like Emily, Edith, etc.

Trends just happen. People who think they are being original are just influenced by the same things.

What's the name OP? We'll give you some feedback.

mamablondie33 · 14/04/2021 18:56

Is it Mabel?

Junebabe · 14/04/2021 20:09

If you love it, go for it. That's what matters most!
