Hi All,

What do you think of these names for a girl?

Elvi/Elvy
Lyla

I really like the name Elvi but worried that it might seem a bit too out there? It's a Scandanavian name.

I do like short, cute girls names although Elvie is the name of my breast pump which was what I thought of first. Lyla probably is a clearer spelling, I assume you want the lie-la pronunciation? Although I do think Lila looks prettier written down. Alternatively Lyra has a nice meaning but I think it may be getting more popular now.

KirstenBlest · 19/03/2021 09:45

I don't like Lyla at all, and there are so many similar names popular now (Lyra, Lily Layla, Lola...), and Elvi seems pretty but a bit like Elvis.

Spied · 19/03/2021 09:47

Elvie looks.like a cheap brand name to me.
I also think of elves.
Lyla is OK however I love Layla.

Spied · 19/03/2021 09:48

Elvi- sorry

Watchingthetelly · 19/03/2021 09:49

I think Lyla is a good name. It sounds lovely, is easy to pronounce and will travel well. I’m not so keen on Elvi as I immediately think it’s a nn for Elvira.

PlanetPuddle · 19/03/2021 09:50

Ooh I like Elvi.

StressedTired · 19/03/2021 09:50

I like them both, although I prefer the alternative Elva to Elvi.

Watchingthetelly · 19/03/2021 09:51

Elva is lovely - haven’t heard that one before

Flymetothestars · 19/03/2021 10:07

How about Edith nn Edie
Or Delilah nn Lilah?

Flymetothestars · 19/03/2021 10:07

Sylvie ?

AlreadyMissingGin · 19/03/2021 10:29

Yeah, I actually have the breast pump and didn't realise the name was the same till a couple of days ago... assumed not that many people would know it. I think Elva is a nice option, also we had considered Eira. Also we had considered Layla/Lyra but a bit worried about popularity. Why is this so hard?!

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 19/03/2021 11:14

Elvi/e i loved until I realised it's a brand of not only breast pumps but also other products a kid wouldn't like to be named after. I once posted a thread asking about Elva and everyone said it reminded them of vulva.

Lyla is fine but a bit dull and very popular i think

Fleetw00d · 19/03/2021 11:25

Love Lyla!

DotDotDotDotDot · 19/03/2021 11:28

What about Elin, Tess, Ines or Nina? Eira is a lovely name.

partyatthepalace · 19/03/2021 14:01

Eira is nice

I don't mind Elvi but it does sound like a brand name in English (it's a cheap clothing label also), Lyla I think is a bit blah and blurs with the multiple Leila/Layla/Lara/Lyra/Lila/Lilys knocking about.

Are you looking for something a bit ethereal? In which case maybe Ffion, Morwena, Lowena, Eseld, Ysella (ee-sella), Ishbel, Aislinn (Ash-linn), Linos, Circe, Sylvie, Elysia,

AlreadyMissingGin · 19/03/2021 14:35

I think so, we tend to like the more ethereal sounding names but nothing too wierd. Thanks for the suggestions, always happy to have more options to consider :)

There is an Elvie in my son's class at school. It's never occurred to me to think of it as "out there' it very much fits in with a lot of the girls names that are popular. I like the Elvie spelling as it looks more finished than Elvi or Elvy.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/03/2021 22:34

Eira is gorgeous -Scandi but also Welsh (so becoming much better known throughout the UK). Elva (Elvi) is also nice - although technically they have different origins (Elvi is more Scandi and Elva/Alva from Irish origins).

Lyla is not my taste - it will get misspelt as Lila/Lilah and possibly also get confused with trendy Myla/Mila. Lara is similar but a bit more classic, so shouldn't date as much? Or for a similar sound/feel, what about Shakespearean Viola? (more well used in other European countries than the UK).Or there is the Scottish Vaila?

GraceON · 09/12/2021 18:24

Hiya, love these names. Out of interest, what did you end up choosing?
