I’m curious to hear how everyone would pronounce the name Elena?
Would you say E-LEH-nah or E-LAY-nah?

El-AY-na like the girl from vampire diaries

PlainJane1000 · 20/03/2021 19:58

I have a friend with this name who promounces it E-lay-na. My grandmother was called Eleanor pronounced El-en-or.

KirstenBlest · 20/03/2021 21:04

Ellen-a

Onlinedilema · 21/03/2021 09:44

I would ask the person how their name is pronounced as I've heard different pronunciations , this would put me off using it tbh.

Violetlavenders · 21/03/2021 11:56

Elaine and Elaina are pronounced with -lay as second syllable.

Eleni or Elena is pronounced El en as the first two syllables.

I don't understand where the ay sound would come from?

SoupDragon · 21/03/2021 12:04

I'd say eLAYna

SoupDragon · 21/03/2021 12:06

Eleanor - Ell en or

Or Ellenna.

It's the same as Helena which can be Helenna or Helayna.

crapbuttrue · 21/03/2021 12:07

El lay na

ScrambledSmegs · 21/03/2021 12:07

El-eh-nah (all short vowels)

Greek, innit.

SwimmingInToys · 21/03/2021 13:00

Eh - lay - na. I've only known one, a Spanish girl and she pronounced it that way.

Frazzled2207 · 21/03/2021 13:03

Ellen-a
I know a few and like it but they get mispronounced as e-lay-na a lot

Frazzled2207 · 21/03/2021 13:04

@Violetlavenders

Elaine and Elaina are pronounced with -lay as second syllable.

Eleni or Elena is pronounced El en as the first two syllables.

It would not in the uk but the Italian and Spanish Elenas (el-lay-na) are fairly common in this country
Violetlavenders · 21/03/2021 13:45

In Italian it's EL-ena.

Frazzled2207 · 21/03/2021 13:51

@Violetlavenders

In Italian it's EL-ena.
Fair point, in some countries it will be pronounced el-lay-na though
ChildOfFriday · 21/03/2021 15:36

@SoupDragon

Eleanor - Ell en or

Or Ellenna.

It's the same as Helena which can be Helenna or Helayna.

Or Hel-ee-na
Violetlavenders · 21/03/2021 16:20

I've only ever heard Elena and Helena as Ell-en-a and Hell-en-a. Just don't understand where the AY sound would come from..?

SoupDragon · 21/03/2021 16:39

You're right, everyone saying otherwise has just made it up 🤦🏻‍♀️

KirstenBlest · 21/03/2021 17:52

In Italian, it's somewhere between El-EN-a and Elaina.

Pemba · 21/03/2021 17:53

Violet, you must know that combinations of letters may be pronounced differently in different languages, right? Well Elena is not an English name, so that's why
.

Cam2020 · 21/03/2021 17:55

El-lay-nah

tenlittlecygnets · 21/03/2021 18:07

Eh-leh-na here

Pretty name

optimistic40 · 21/03/2021 19:42

I would pronounce it e-LAY-na

Laureatus · 22/03/2021 22:32

The Old English poem Elena is usually pronounced like Eleanor, but I knew a girl at uni who was called Elena and pronounced it Elayna.

JanewaysBun · 22/03/2021 22:50

Eh lennnnn a
Not like ellena

LizzieAnt · 22/03/2021 22:54

I pronounce Elena as Elayna.
Helena is Hel-ee-na.
Eleanor is El-an-ur, with the r being very much pronounced.
I'm in Ireland, and they're the standard pronunciations where I am.
