"Sorry- but it just makes me think of Robert Clive, and I'm not really a fan of British colonisation in India (or anywhere else)"
Aw, that's a shame that you have negative associations around the name, @rattymcratrat. It makes me think more of someone like Clive James or Clive Dunn, or even the very posh Cliveden House Hotel. But no, you don't want a baby name that reminds you of British Colonialism.
Have you considered Arlo at all?

ignatiusjreilly · 16/03/2021 22:59

Finn is nice but a bit overused now. I came across a Finneon the other day, which I rather liked.

Astraturf · 17/03/2021 06:15

Arlo is very popular now. Finneon is nice but would get shortened to Finn and makes me think of a fish.

I noticed you have Davy on your list - have you considered Gary? Similar and I bet there have been very few baby Garys the last few years, if any.

ignatiusjreilly · 17/03/2021 14:11

I'm sorry to report that DH isn't keen on Clive, so I've had to cross it off my list of potential names. He prefers Harold (Harry for short).

I wonder why Harry is so popular but Gary isn't? Prince Gary doesn't have quite the same ring to it, I suppose.

I think Gary is a much nicer name than Harry. Exmil wanted Henry nn Harry if Dd was a girl rather than Clive. No way! She should have called ex dp Henry/Harry if she liked it so much.
ignatiusjreilly · 17/03/2021 16:09

@Astraturf What did you end up choosing for your DD, if you don't mind me asking? We obviously have similar tastes in names.

We went with Blanche in the end. I don't think Blanche and Clive work well together so any future DS will need a new list I think.
Middle name Willow

ignatiusjreilly · 17/03/2021 16:20

Blanche Willow is beautiful, Astraturf.

I agree with you that Blanche and Clive don't go well together. They remind me of an old couple on a coach holiday.

Blanche and Gary sounds really modern though.

Gary is definitely on the list!

One of my mum friends has a Darryl and a Giovanni. Giovanni might be a bit out there for you but it was actually going to be our middle name for DS but feel like we couldn't use it in the end. But maybe one for you OP?

ignatiusjreilly · 18/03/2021 21:42

DH has a friend called Giovanni but it mostly gets shortened to Geo. Or occasionally Geodude. I like it.

Angliski · 18/03/2021 21:53

Gus
Marley
Kit
Jude
Gary
Barnaby
Titus

ElderMillennial · 20/03/2021 09:51

Clive must be a "marmite" name. I really don't like it either, OP.

Some really good suggestions though. We are expecting a boy too and haven't settled on a name but have a few months to think about it.

Roseg990 · 20/03/2021 11:14

Lorenzo
Nile or Niall
Aldo
Arlo
Indie
Elio
Marley or Harley

Me neither! It's in the same 'dad name' category as Derek, Keith, Malcolm, Ian, Brian, etc. Just not names I imagine for babies at all! That said, 10 years ago I wouldn't have imagined a baby Stanley or Archie but 'grandad names' have really taken off!

ElderMillennial · 20/03/2021 22:16

Yes you are right, names like Henry, Harry, Albert, Archie all seem to be back in style.

I know someone with a young Norman, which i thought odd at the time, but up to them of course.

miltonj · 20/03/2021 22:58

Where I'm from a lot of people would pronounce Clive like 'Clarve',
