Zachary Malachy or Gabriel

To go with DS Cillian. Other suggestions welcome. I have another son whose name I won't mention as both together might be outing.

I don't want anything too common for our next child as it would make Cillian seem out of place. Want something with a similar feel, it doesn't have to be Irish though. Surname is one syllable.
We already have a girls name chosen, Alannah.
Thanks Smile

Couldn't you use Malachy nickname key? My friend is called keiron nn kei, don't suppose it matters how it's spelt.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 14/03/2021 22:33

Mac is a nickname for Malachy.

My favourite is Gabriel with Malachi nn Mac second place

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 14/03/2021 22:33

Also it's Malachi not Malachy, right?

WeIcomeToGilead · 14/03/2021 22:38

Gabriel is a beautiful name.

Zachary and Malachy - definitely roared across the playground I’m afraid!

NovemberR · 14/03/2021 22:41

You need a comma! Grin

I came on here to say you can't call a kid Zachary Malachy.

It's like Hairy Maclairy...

Drunkenmonkey · 14/03/2021 22:53

@NovemberR how about a hyphen? Zachary-Malachy? Grin

@SmeleanorSmellstrop I believe Malachi is a different name and is usually pronounced Mal-ah-kai, whereas Malachy is Irish and pronounced Mal-ah-key

@Drunkenmonkey

Ooh, that makes all the difference! I like it... Grin

A friend has just named her baby Boy Malley, it is similar to Malachy

Petal7 · 14/03/2021 23:02

Gabriel is by far the best.

Mishmased · 14/03/2021 23:15

@Drunkenmonkey we have always gotten very positive responses with Malachi although as we are in Ireland he gets called Malachy at first but once people know the difference they call him Malachi. I am yet to meet another Malachi and when I was pregnant with him 8 years ago, one of the ladies in my yoga class was called Malachy. That is the only Malachy I know to date. I'm currently 29 weeks pregnant and obstetrician told me one of his sons is called Malachi and was delighted at meeting another parent with a Malachi.

Your choice goes nicely with Cillian 😊

Mishmased · 14/03/2021 23:19

@Rachellow I'm in the republic and it is a completely different reaction here to both Malachi and Malachy.

@Drunkenmonkey I honestly haven't come across any Gabriel even adults in a long time. If you don't like Gabe as nn what about Abe?

Mishmased · 14/03/2021 23:22

@Seriouslymole I'm looking for Biblical Hebrew girl name suggestions. Thought I'd ask as you picked Jotham. We currently have a Malachi and Asher. I have a list of boy names but stuck on girl names.

Apologies @Drunkenmonkey

Drunkenmonkey · 14/03/2021 23:25

Abe is nice!

Gabriel. It’s my favourite name. I don’t like the other two.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/03/2021 23:31

The only problem with your DH not liking Gabe. Gabriel might do and your DH can't stop him using it. It'll be his name!.With the greatest respect your DH will sound a bit of crank saying to his mates when he's 15 "Its Gabriel, not Gabe".

LizzieAnt · 15/03/2021 09:44

I love Gabriel, though I'm not mad about Gabe either. Cillian Murphy has a son Malachy afaik.

There aren't so many to choose from are there? The only ones that spring to mind are Rebekah, Debra and Abigail.

I love biblical names but we are so church-orientated that it would just have looked contrived if we'd have gone with it, so we have Jotham as a middle name for DS and went completely secular for first names!

KirstenBlest · 16/03/2021 11:45

Of the 3, Zachary. Only thing I have against it is that it is popular. I like Zac.

Malachy is in the same vein as Cillian. Will be Mal.

Gabriel - I find it too long and will be Gabe. I wouldn't choose it
