Thoughts on these boys’ names

I have a list of at least a dozen girls’ names that I love, but I’m drawing blanks for boys (I’m not even fully convinced by my first DS’s name and he’s nearly two, hahah!)

Thoughts on:
Cedric
Declan
Julian

Or other suggestions that work in both English and French? I’m leaning towards Cedric, as is my DM... not sure where DH’s head is at, but he’ll take Mumsnet suggestions and feedback semi-seriously with me! :-)

Love Cedric best

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/03/2021 19:01

Declan would be my choice of those three. I feel bad, but I have to say I find Julian quite wet sounding, and Cedric is a bit old man/slightly geeky to me, sorry.

Not 100% on what would work in French but Maxim? Lucien? Elias? Laurent? Felix? Rufus? Benedict? Dominic? Wilfred? Alaric? Wolfric? (last 2 quite out there but cool imo)

ValpolicellaPrimitivo · 13/03/2021 19:04

I'd probably go with Declan.

How about?
Maxim
Vincent
Christian
Sebastian
David
Robert
Frederick
Louis
Charles
William
Xavier
Alexander
Oliver
Philip
Benedict
Gabriel
Raphael
Dominic
Elliott

Oh there are some neat ones on these lists. I’ve never heard of Alaric and I don’t think I’d be brave enough. But I do love it!

I like Cedric!

How about Quentin?

partyatthepalace · 14/03/2021 14:02

Julian is Ok but like Julius better
Declan I think is ugly and low rent (sorry!)
Cedric I think is half cute/half naff so I wouldn’t unless you are dead set

French/English names - Samuel, Charles, Lucian, Alexander, Nicholas, Oliver, Philip, Gabriel, Raphael, Antoine, Christopher, Benedict, Dominic (I know there are spelling variations, but would just go with the spelling of the country he’ll actually grow up in).

WildCherryBlossom · 14/03/2021 14:08

I really like Cedric and Julian, but not Declan personally.

17caterpillars1mouse · 14/03/2021 14:19

Cedric - I think it's a brilliant, underused name, I wanted to use it but it rhymes with my husbands name so we decided against it (and had girls)

Declan - nice but I prefer the other two
Julian - lovely underused name though I know my parents generation all thought it was awful when we were considering it

Other names we considered

  • Benedict
  • Dominic
  • Nicholas
  • Rufus
  • Elias

Alaric I was the King of the Visigoths and the name is actually used nearly as often as Cedric in the UK (6 times vs 9 for Cedric last year but varies year on year - although never more than mid teens for both Alaric or Cedric). Although the name Alaric is becoming slightly better known since it was used on an US teen tv show. I really love the sound of it too but I can't use any -ric ending name as it clashes with my surname, so annoying!

Love Cedric

BramStoker · 14/03/2021 15:49

Declan

Anoisagusaris · 14/03/2021 15:51

Cedric and Julian are awful drippy names. Similar to Percy and Ashley.

VenusClapTrap · 15/03/2021 19:52

I like Julian. How about Eric?

MuddleMoo · 15/03/2021 20:25

Declan is my favourite

Was going to say exactly the same!
