No, I think it's questionable for a boy but it is at least the name of a man.

How about Atlanta?

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 12/03/2021 23:17

I think it's truly awful for a boy or a girl.

MrsAmaretto · 12/03/2021 23:18

No.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 12/03/2021 23:20

I know a teenage Atlas, son of a Danish friend, who can just about pull it off

You know Atlas was the titan doomed to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders......I really wouldn't us it for that reason.

MondeoFan · 12/03/2021 23:23

Yes I like it, it's different, it's not a pretty name though if that's what you're after also I think it depends on what accent it's said in

TaraR2020 · 12/03/2021 23:25

Nope, sorry

FabulouslyFab · 12/03/2021 23:26

What are you thinking?????? 😂😂

stripey1 · 12/03/2021 23:36

Encyclopaedia would sound more feminine? Smile

Iamthewombat · 12/03/2021 23:38

CHRIST NO.

ThatLibraryMiss · 12/03/2021 23:39

If your little girl wants an atlas the Collins one's good, but most people these days use Google Earth.

ThatLibraryMiss · 12/03/2021 23:41

All-encompassing and comprehensive, yes. Almanac if you wanted something briefer, maybe.
Synchrony · 12/03/2021 23:57

It's a boy's name.

MercyBodle · 13/03/2021 00:00

I have come across a girl called Atlas and I don't mind it.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/03/2021 00:04

Sorry to be blunt, but I think it would be unfair on her. Fine if you are upper/upper middle class and have a boy - his peers may be less likely to think or tease that you've named him after a geography atlas rather than a Titan. If you aren't joking and really love the sound of the name, then perhaps more feminine mythological Atalanta or Artemis instead?

alexdgr8 · 13/03/2021 00:08

NO> no. no.
neither for a boy or girl.
sounds like an old advert for body-builder equipment.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 13/03/2021 02:09

Oh don’t!

DPotter · 13/03/2021 02:12

For the sake of all you hold to be holy and sacred - just no

CrayonInThreeBits · 13/03/2021 02:20

I immediately think of some ripped hunk with a massive ball, so, no.

partyatthepalace · 13/03/2021 02:23

Quite.

OP - Atlas is a mythical bruiser who carries the world on his back, you might as well call your daughter Neptune.

If you want a mythological name for her there are many to chose from - Athena, Diana, Freya, Bridget, Persephone, etc

NiceGerbil · 13/03/2021 02:35

Atlas was a bloke though.

katy1213 · 13/03/2021 02:46

If she grows up to be a female body-builder with a six-pack and tattoos - it might be quite nice.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/03/2021 03:00

It's about the most masculine name possible.

And, once again, the only reason girls are given boys' names and boys aren't given girls' names is because being a boy is a promotion and being a girl is a demotion.

Time to raise a strong, awesome, cute, fearless, loving Persephone-Athena. Screw the boys' names.

deethra · 13/03/2021 08:14

Personally I think it sounds quite masculine.
My DS (9) has a boy in his class called Atlas. I do love the name, and think its unusual and quirky, but I'm not sold on it for a girl.
How about using it as a middle name if you really like it?
Also, for what it's worth my DD had a typically male variant of a name (although I think it sounds feminine). If you really like Atlas for a girl, then don't let others sway you too much. Although, due to the fact you're asking for opinions, I'd guess you aren't 100% sold on it?!

EssentialHummus · 13/03/2021 08:16

Artemis?

KaptainKaveman · 13/03/2021 08:22

Exactly!

How about Sycorax?
