We really love both spellings but can’t decide which one we love more. Middle name Dahlia.

At least with Astryd you lose the "astride" connotation...

Haffdonga · 10/03/2021 23:17

@midsomermurderess

The first one looks like it should be pronounced 'astride'. That could be unfortunate.
Yes, this.

Astrid is a lovely. Astryd will lead to a lifetime of misunderstanding, mispronunciation and shit sexist banter.

HedgeSparrows · 10/03/2021 23:22

Astryd to me looks as though it should be pronounced astride.

Knitterbabe · 10/03/2021 23:56

I know of several Astrids born in the last few months; I don’t think it will be unusual for long. All are spelt Astrid.

DramaAlpaca · 10/03/2021 23:58

Astrid. Keep it simple and traditional.

Itsjustaride8w737 · 11/03/2021 00:16

Honestly, neither. Dahlia is fine.

DowntonCrabby · 11/03/2021 00:18

Astrid

babynamelover · 11/03/2021 00:19

Anystarinthesky · 11/03/2021 00:24

Astrid

lunarlife · 11/03/2021 00:27

Astrid
( wish astride hadn't bean mentioned because now I'm thinking ick!)

EugenesAxe · 11/03/2021 00:32

-id... novelty spellings are naff.

To clarify (because someone will be along saying it's spelt Astryd in Finland or something), in my opinion -yd would constitute a novelty spelling in the UK.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 11/03/2021 20:41

Astryd looks like a death metal band.... 🎸 🤘

ShutUpAlex · 11/03/2021 20:56

Even better @BatleyTownswomensGuild Grin

Astrid. The y just looks as if you're trying too hard.

astrydluvv · 14/03/2026 21:14

my names astryd and it’s spelt that way so i’d probably go with the way my name is spelt cuz im used to it but astrid is more natural

LivingTheDreamish · 15/03/2026 02:53

Astrid. Lovely name.

RuairiDonovan · 15/03/2026 12:11

skeggycaggy · 09/03/2021 20:53

Astryd doesn’t appear at all on the Darkergreener baby name app (which means that fewer than 3 babies have been given the name IIRC). Astrid is on it, up to 316th most popular name.

It does. Baby name explorer - Astryd.
Baby name explorer is the usual spelling.

RuairiDonovan · 15/03/2026 13:27

Astrid is the usual spelling. (correction)

CGR12 · 16/03/2026 07:26

Astrid 1000%! Gorgeous name!

timoteigirl · 16/03/2026 19:29

Not come across the spelling with Y before - where is it from?

AllJoyAndNoFun · 16/03/2026 21:47

Love Astrid. Dsis was going to use it for DN but then went for Stella instead (also lovely though).

Calliopespa · 16/03/2026 22:18

midsomermurderess · 09/03/2021 18:24

The first one looks like it should be pronounced 'astride'. That could be unfortunate.

Indeed. Could be very unfortunate.

Is that even a legit spelling OP?

Astrid.

RuairiDonovan · 17/03/2026 10:33

@Calliopespa It was used 5 times in 2022 but no others. Baby name explorer - Astryd.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 18/03/2026 15:50

Astrid, definitely. I have no doubt that someone somewhere has spelt it Astryd before, because most names that are usually spelt with an I have been spelt with a Y occasionally. But Astrid is so much more well known, it will make life a lot easier for her and probably for you too.

mumummm · 18/03/2026 17:09

Astrid because that's now it's supposed to be spelt, isn't it? Why change the spelling, for what reason? I don't mean to sound rude, I am genuinely curious
