Verity, Ivy, Flora or Esther?

Hi, looking for some name help/opinions please!

My DH and I both like the following names, but none of them feel 'just right', I feel really confused and uncertain!

Shortlist:

  • Verity (middle name would be Rose)
  • Ivy
  • Flora (but our surname ends in 'er' and I'm not sure if the two sound quite right together)
  • Esther (same issue with 'er' surname)

As more background into our name style, I love the names Edith and Elodie, but DH doesn't like them. He likes earthy names like Willow, but I find that a bit too soft for an adult name.

We also like the name Lydia, but our names both begin with L, and I don't want us all to have names starting with the same letter (feels a bit Kardashian to me!).

What do you think to our shortlist?

And are there any other names you'd suggest?

Esther is my favourite of your list, it’s a very attractive name.

I also absolutely love Elspeth as pp suggests.

@luluorange ooh which vague area are you from? Just wondering if we know the same person...

BramStoker · 02/03/2021 07:47

Most to least favourite for me
Verity
Flora
Esther

Ivy

BramStoker · 02/03/2021 07:48

I also prefer Elspeth to Esther

ImmortalBalloons · 02/03/2021 07:51

Estelle?

pilates · 02/03/2021 07:55

I only like Verity

blondie87 · 02/03/2021 09:30

Esther and Elodie are both beautiful!

luluorange · 02/03/2021 18:26

@Santatizer I knew her when I lived in a seaside town if that's any help? Funny if it is the same person!

Thank you so much everyone! Each of your comments has been really helpful.

Some good additional name suggestions too. Particular favourites for me: Elspbeth and Elouise.

This thread has really helped and from our original 4, we've narrowed it down to 2. Verity, and Esther.

@notasillysausage, has your Verity ever experienced any negativity about her name? A friend of mine doesn't like it and now that is getting in my ear. Also, do you shorten Verity to anything as a nickname?

Thanks again all x

A pp suggested Vespa - it means wasp !
Verity is lovely in both sound and meaning. I very much like Esther and I don’t think the double “er” is necessarily an issue, it depends on the sound of your name. Esther Walker for instance, sounds fine to me. The majority of women still change their name when they marry, so it isn’t necessarily a lifelong issue anyway.

notasillysausage · 03/03/2021 14:44

@CharlieD2020 not yet (but she is only 6 months old so they’d have to be a special kind of mean to pick on a baby 😂). We haven’t used any nicknames for her really. I guess as she gets older her friends may come up with some!

The way I see it, you are always going to have some people who don’t like the name you end up picking so you just have to go with your gut.

When I was naming her it was between Sadie and Verity, I just picked on impulse really as DH left it up to me.

CharlieD2020 · 07/03/2021 20:28

@notasillysausage that really would be a special kind of mean 😂

I think you're right. Sadie is lovely too. I think we will choose between Verity and Esther when we meet her 💕

Thanks @SirVixofVixHall, oddly enough I'm not a big fan of Vespa, even though it is a name similiar sounding to Verity and Esther! Thanks for flagging the suggestion though :) glad to hear you don't think the 'er' thing would be a big issue, I'm feeling better about that now so really grateful for your comment and others!

I don’t think Vespa is an actual name is it ? Other than latin for wasp ?

HummusAndCarrotSticks · 08/03/2021 08:42

I think Vesper is a name. Sounds like Vespa. Vespa makes me think of motorised scooters tbh.

midsomermurderess · 08/03/2021 09:41

I'd go for Esther. Verity is a bit prim, I've never been keen on Ivy. Flora would be my second choice. Esther seems quite feisty, a good name to go through life with.

DragonPoop · 08/03/2021 09:44

Ivy,

Or how about Vera, Nancy or Fern?

clairehr · 08/03/2021 11:05

Wading in as I have an Esther Willow, obviously we think it's a beautiful name and only had positive reactions to it.

Initially we were going to call her Essie as a nickname to make it seem a little softer, but actually she suits Esther more.

My advice would be to say both first and surname together several times over, see how it sounds.
