Doris Lily

I keep fluctuating between loving this name and then having second thoughts.

I know it has old lady associations but that aside, I like the sound and think it would suit someone of all ages.

I tend to be drawn to names that people arent sure of at first and then they grow on them. Will this be a grower?

My mom is a Thelma (91) and her big sisters were Laura Ivy and Doris.

Tbh my auntie Doris always loathed her name and generally went as Dot instead. Funnily enough I was saying to a friend this morning that I can’t imagine Doris making a revival...

Don’t like it. Old lady name that doesn’t sound cute at all. Also sounds like a slow loris.

I like Dora much more. Yes there is the explorer but it's just a kids program so I wouldn't worry about that

Locally “Doris” is an insult for slow elderly drivers. “hurry the F up Doris”, “Stop driving like a Doris”.

Even if it wasn’t, I’d still not use it as it seems an ugly name to me. Like Gertrude, Winnifred or Phyllis. Edith, Sylvia, Ada, Ivy, Iris, Isabel, Annie, Rosemary etc are all nicer old woman names.

It's not my taste, sorry - I just don't like the sound of it.

Iris is popular because it is part of 3 associations/trends which means it was always likely to rise into the top 100 - Retro/vintage (Ada, Nancy etc), Floral (Rose, Lily etc) and Mythological (Freya, Thea etc).

Doris unfortunately only has the retro/vintage or "old lady" so is never going to be that popular - as it also doesn't have the trendy "y/ie" ending or the popular sounds that other newly revived vintage names do (Ivy, Elsie etc). If you think about it, Mavis is similar to Doris but hasn't really comeback yet (despite the relative popularity of similar sounding Mabel, Maeve and even May as a middle).

If you are looking for a retro/vintage name that is on it's way up but not there yet, I think Audrey and to a lesser extent Sylvia or Freda could make a comeback due to their popular sounds.

This sums it up for me. It just doesn’t have the same appeal as some of the other older names, and I really can’t imagine 10 year old Doris running in the sports day, or 16 year old Doris doing her exams, or 18 year old Doris getting a tattoo....

I think it could make a comeback. Dorothy and Iris have, so why not Doris.

God no it’s an awful name. It’s one of those where your DD will grow and up be like why the fuck did you name me that.

No, it was my Mothers name and she was known by something totally different.
It has a horrible sound to it.

I really like Doris
