Boys names dilemma

My husband likes Quentin and I like Magnus. Neither keen to go to the other.
We both like Alfred and Edmund.
It would be Alfred James or Edmund Wilfred.
Fear with both is that while I like the names, the shortenings ‘Alfie’ ‘Fred’ and then ‘Teddy’ are really common and really not as lovely to me as Magnus 😬
If someone could suggest the perfect name that would be great 🙈

Magnus is my favourite too. I'd drop Alfred and Quentin.
Edmund is fine and doesn't have to be Ted.

I love the name Edmund. Also love the name James.

You don't have to shorten Edmund at all, or you could use Ed or Eddie rather than Ted.

VenusClapTrap · 25/02/2021 14:08

I love Magnus, but if your Dh doesn’t like it you have to go with something else. I like Edmund. I’d either use the full name and not abbreviate it (it isn’t obligatory!) or shorten to Ed.

RightMoveAddiction · 25/02/2021 14:09

What about Angus? Love that name. Maybe it would suit you both as a middle ground between the two names?

Really really not keen on Quentin.

Edmund (and Edgar and Edwin) all good names.
No need to shorten any of them.

'Ned' is a traditional shortening for them - although not in Scotland, where it has another meaning.

I just think people would think we had a Scottish connection!

Augustus Dominic Robert Michael Julian Maxim Tobias Christopher Edwin Louis Gabriel Sebastian Jonathan Lysander Lucien Miles Elliot Xavier Willem Hector Victor Percy Albert Gregory Atticus Fraser Thomas Lucas Isaac Timothy Eric Vincent Christian
Thank you for that list; there’s some lovely names there but it also illustrates how hard this is and so many are discounted because they are alliteration with last name, or names of pricks from school 😂

Quite like Timothy actually

Ha, I like Alfred and Edmund, but I think Quentin is one of the world’s worst names, not very keen on Magnus either.

Wilfred’s nice though?

Other thoughts - Patrick, Arthur, Miles, Giles, Cassian, Augustus, Tristan/Tristram, Kester, Josiah, Joshua, Tobias, Nathaniel, John, Guy, Hugh, Jasper, Casper, Robin, Barnaby/Barnabas, Zachariah, Lucas, Rufus, Rafe, Dominic, Alistair, Christian

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/02/2021 18:43

I love Magnus, Alfred, Wilfred, Edmund and James. Not keen on Quentin or the Alfie/Freddie, Teddy nn's either.

If you can't decide I'd use James (nn Jem/Jamie) or Wilfred (nn Wil/Wilf) as first names instead (although I think Edmund could be Ed or Ned as much as Ted/Teddy).

Other options: Nicholas (Nico/Cole), Benedict (Ben/Ned), Charles, Elias, Hugh, Matthew/Mathias, Phillip, Peter, Simon, Stephen, Nathaniel ?

Hellie36 · 26/02/2021 18:51

I love Edmund which I think traditionally was always shortened to Ned. How about Eugene nn Gene?

fastingnewby · 26/02/2021 20:58

I love Magnus! Quentin should stay on Kirrin Island.

What about Ellis, Malachy, Edgar, Archer, Theodore or Hugh?

Onlinedilema · 26/02/2021 21:56

Edmund and James are by far the nicest names on your list.

Arrierttyclock · 26/02/2021 22:00

I love Magnus but it's been vetoed by everyone for some reason! Love it! My current new faves are Heston and Rex

Serin · 26/02/2021 23:25

Magnus Edmund is a fine name.
Really dont like Alfie/Fred.

Buzz22 · 27/02/2021 07:45

Surely if you think Angus has a scottish connection then so does Magnus?
Very scandi/scottish.

BerylSilverstone · 27/02/2021 11:21

Ooh I love Magnus!
What about Dominic?
