I like it a lot

Calmondeck · 16/02/2021 18:13

I really like it - ticks the strong yet feminine box for me. I like that it has the longer formal name, Sammie/y for a small child, Sam is unisex and warm sounding to me

angelaEhen · 16/02/2021 18:16

I think it's nice

Houseworkavoider · 16/02/2021 18:16

I love it! Would be on my list

MrsSDK · 16/02/2021 18:17

Really like it!

Daisylookslost · 16/02/2021 18:18

First thought: Sex and the City

Alonelonelyloner · 16/02/2021 18:20

I've never thought of this name before and actually I love it!

Perpetualheadache · 16/02/2021 18:31

😂

Dora26 · 16/02/2021 18:36

Samantha Power is a great role model!

CorianderBee · 16/02/2021 18:58

Very 90s

LocalHobo · 16/02/2021 19:04

Every Samantha I have met has been particularly nice, and I like that you can choose to be known as Sam or Sammy.
Go for it.

SeanChailleach · 16/02/2021 20:36

It's like Symunda or Saemunda which are Icelandic names. I used to work for a lovely Samantha so I have a great feeling about it.

ItsTheDramaMickILoveIt · 16/02/2021 20:41

I went to uni with two - one went by the full name and one shortened it to Sam, which was handy. And I was at primary school with a Samantha, she was in my class. All would have been born 1984-1988ish. I do think it has a bit of an 80s vibe but I really like it and you don’t hear of many now!

sonnysunshine · 16/02/2021 20:43

I think it's horribly dated and unfortunately have known a fuel people call Samantha that I don't like.

partyatthepalace · 16/02/2021 20:44

@MaidEdithofAragon

Beautiful if pronounced fully. Round here you get 'Sman-faarr' which isn't great.
I like it. Like the ‘tha’ sound. Didn’t know it had such a long history. You could lead the revival.

However the PP is right about being careful where you live...

wibdib · 17/02/2021 01:30

I’m another Sam /Samantha by my mother if (when!) I was in trouble for something. She even admitted to choosing it because she liked it in the witchy series that I’ve now forgotten the name of (and I’d have much preferred Tabitha to Samantha!)

Of the Samantha’s that I’ve known, most tend to be born late 60s to early 80s. Very few male Sam’s born in that era but lots of old and young male Samuel’s or Sam’s - so lots of older and younger people (and children of/parents of) forget that Sam is a unisex name.

I’ve also been told lots of different origins and meanings for the name - everything from old Hebrew and Middle English to both Indian and Native American, dating anywhere from ancient to 1940s. So no idea what it originally meant or where it came from! Suspect 1940s is too late and it was already in use well before that.

SionnachRua · 17/02/2021 01:48

Due a revival imo.
I do hate the Sa-man-far pronunciation though!

MysteriousMonkey · 17/02/2021 18:27

@letsnotscaretheneighbours I've never noticed before but yes now you mention it that does seem to be a Sammy theme... I was always a Sammy at primary school but then after that it always seemed a bit childish and wrong for me when I tried to use it (might be the lack of nice nails and and makeup Grin).

MysteriousMonkey · 17/02/2021 18:28

@wibdib I was once in a very long term relationship with a Darren and thought if we had a daughter I'd call her Tabitha... Didn't work out in the end although I still like the name Grin

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 17/02/2021 18:34

@MysteriousMonkey 🤣🤣🤣

What's funny is I've just seen the girl I went to school with that was a Sammy (we're 40s now) and she's exactly the same now 🤣

Bluesername · 17/02/2021 18:56

I like it. Sami as nickname is nice.

danascully96 · 17/02/2021 20:56

I think it’s pretty and warm sounding, v suburban in a good way! Not pretentious, girl-next-door vibes 💘
