I have posted before and had real mixed opinions but I guess that's what mumsnet is for!

Am currently 30 weeks with second boy. Have a 3 y/o called Bodhi. SO names on the list -

Ziggy
Sonny
River
Ray
Dillon

I know a few of them are a bit out there, but we really aren't keen on traditional names. You're allowed to be brutal - I can take it! Grin

I knew before I even opened this thread that the name ‘bodhi’ would appear 🤣

Tbh none of them are to my taste, but then I like traditional names. I like River and Dillon best. Dillon is actually very sweet. Ziggy is a bit too deliberately quirky, Sonny makes me think ‘C’mere Sonny’ and Ray is a bit dull.

SorbusAucuparia · 11/02/2021 11:19

They remind me of names that musicians would choose (that's not a bad thing!). Maybe Ziggy Stardust is throwing me.

River seems like the odd one out, for some reason, but I like it best.

How about:
Bay (also quite popular)
Milo
Arlo (another popular one)
Phoenix
Bear

Bodhi has a bohemian hippy vibe for me and I personally think that Ziggy and River fit into this same bracket. Sonny could work too although less in keeping with the style.

Ray and Dillon don't work with Bodhi for me. If someone told me their first born was Bodhi and second born was Ray or Dillon, I would assume the couple couldn't find a name they loved as much as Bodhi and compromised on a family name. I may be completely off the mark but that would be my assumption.

Of course you may not be concerned with how the name sits with your first born as they won't come as a set forever but I do feel the first born sets the tone for siblings to come and while you might not want a matchy matchy set, I would want them to be at least as interesting as each other.

CeefBurry · 11/02/2021 11:25

Not keen on any of them
Sorry
Sonny prob the best imo

galaxy9 · 11/02/2021 11:29

Love Sonny and River. Dislike Dillon the most. I really like Sky/Skye for a boy at the moment

elfran · 11/02/2021 11:33

I like River best as Bodhi's little brother, with Ziggy and Sonny as runners-up.

Agree that Ray and Dillon seem like outliers here, totally different in style. Ray is an old man (and not in a cool way) to me, and Dillon just feels a tad dated.

SabrinaThwaite · 11/02/2021 11:55

I think you've missed a trick by not including Doyle on your list.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/02/2021 12:04

River, Ray and Dylan (spelt the usual way for his sake) are very nice imo - although I suppose River could be considered a bit hippy/arty (but this would work well with Bodhi, as would the cool retro Ray).

Sonny and Ziggy are horribly trendy/cutesy, sorry. Although Sonny could be a cute nn for any name ending in -son or Sullivan, Solomon etc, and Ziggy possibly for any name with a strong "Z" sound - Xavier, Xander, Zachary, Isaac etc.

You might also like Heath, Leif or Fen as nature/hippy names to work with Bodhi (or maybe Zen if you want the spiritual route, or Zev which means wolf?)

TinyCake · 11/02/2021 12:08

Ziggy - no
Sonny - no
River - for some reason I think of this as girls name
Ray - cute - would he be Raymond?
Dillon - lovely, do you like Dylan?

Bluesername · 11/02/2021 12:12

I like Ray, River and Dillon.

3JsMa · 11/02/2021 12:15

Love the name Ziggy but I may be a bit biased (it's my DM brother's name).

Other than that
Otis
Jasper
Xander
Soren

Greendoonan · 11/02/2021 12:18

Head?

Butcanyoujusttellme · 11/02/2021 12:22

I don’t think I would call my child river, I like ziggy, but it really feels like more of a nickname, for something like Ezekiel, which is a lovely name.
I like sonny, though it’s typical a nn I think this is my favourite one though
Ray isn’t for me and Dillon is nice and looks nice but I think he will get fed up spelling it to people all the time, unless you’re Irish perhaps

Some other options:
Heath
Phoenix
Rowan
Atlas
Oakley

pontiouspilates · 11/02/2021 12:47

Dillon is lovely and I think.it.sojndw nice.with Bodhi ,Ray is cute and River I quite like. Ziggy feels a bit try hard to me and Sonny is really over used where I live. Congratulations on your imminent arrival OP x

Anoisagusaris · 11/02/2021 12:50

Ray is quite a traditional name.

thesparkthatbled · 11/02/2021 12:56

I like Ray best, not that keen on any others on your list.

What about Roscoe or Fenner?

CeibaTree · 11/02/2021 13:01

River and Dylan are the names I'd choose from your list.
Other unusual suggestions: Zephyr, Sylvan, Ivo, Jupiter.

arethereanyleftatall · 11/02/2021 13:09

I'll be honest. The reality is when you/your son tell anyone their name, that person will smile and say 'what a lovely name'; whilst internally thinking the exact opposite and wondering why you needed to choose such try hard names.

evouk · 11/02/2021 13:21

I only like Dillon but then he'll get called Dill at school and eventually Dildo

If we had gone with one of our two top names for DD her initials would have been BJ. Decided not to go with that for obvious reasons

ParadiseLaundry · 11/02/2021 14:18

Absolutely love River. It sounds great with Bodhi too!

MerryChristmasToYou · 11/02/2021 14:25

Ziggy - ok, a bit nicknamey
Sonny - it's a nickname.
River - a bit wet
Ray - like it a lot
Dillon - Magic Roundabout

WearingPurpleForMe · 11/02/2021 14:29

Haze

NYCDreaming · 11/02/2021 15:59

I am absolutely in love with the combo Sonny Ray!

Firebird83 · 11/02/2021 23:08

I love River

partyatthepalace · 12/02/2021 08:55

Well Bodhi means enlightenment doesn't it, so I guess I'd expect a sibling name to have some kind of spiritual or nature meaning - so River or at a push Ray (ray of light?!)

Ziggy sounds like a name for a dog, Sonny sounds like he's about to be grabbed by the ear by a 1950s policeman (and both are cutsey trendy), I like Dylan if it's spelt like that, but it doesn't really go with Bodhi.
