What do you think of the name Éamonn? Does it conjure up unwanted thoughts of Éamonn Holmes?

I also love Oisín, but it's off limits as it's the name of my nephew, whom I'm very close to. Any other good, vowely Irish names in a similar vein?

I know someone who spells it ‘Amen’.

DeeThree · 09/02/2021 11:19

Personally I don't like Éamonn, but if you do then go for it.
Other suggestions:
Aodh (pronounced A , can't get much more vowely)
Aidan
Aodhán
Odhrán
Éanna
Enda
Ultan
Uinseann
Iarfhlaith (although this is hard even for some Irish people!)

@JollyGreenGiantess

I know someone who spells it ‘Amen’.
Gosh, there's something kind of annoying about that. Grin

@DeeThree, DS was nearly Iarla. I love that name, but as we were living in England at the time, we thought Iarfhlaith might blow people's minds.

ElspethFlashman · 09/02/2021 11:38

You just spell it Iarla.

I don't know many people who still use the older way. Know a few Iarlas though. It's become very popular.

I’m in NI and know a few Éamons so it doesn’t conjure up thoughts of Holmes or De Valera at all. It’s just another name. One of the Éamons is a teen.

MrsHookey · 09/02/2021 12:29

Saorse?

BerylSilverstone · 09/02/2021 12:31

Euan? X

@MrsHookey

Saorse?
Do you mean Saoirse? The girls name?
Stonehopper · 09/02/2021 12:33

@MrsHookey

Saorse?
If you mean Saoirse, that's a girl's name. Or do you mean Seóirse?

Thank you for the feedback Grin

Yes, I was wondering whether it is old mannish. Not too bothered by that though as we're not in Ireland. Glad it doesn't seem to call to mind Holmes for everyone (DH was sure that it would but maybe that's the result of him watching too much crap television in lockdown).

Iarlaith/Iarla and Éanna are lovely. Also really like Aodh. Definitely adding those to my list. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

It's not going to make Irish people think of Mr Holmes but it probably will be most non-Irish people's first thought. Not a huge deal though.

I like Ultan as it's not too common and the spelling isn't going to fox anyone. Ultan Dillane is kind of cool.

partyatthepalace · 09/02/2021 16:19

It really does conjure those thoughts, and also de Valera, which is worse. Don’t like it but don’t absolutely hate it.

Owen, Rory, Conal? I like Blaise. Also think Patrick is mega underused right now.
