Hi, I'm a mother to be and I have an obsession with looking at baby names recently but I want opinions on the names

Boys names:
Rowan (Nickname: Rowe) Middle name: Atlas
Arlo (nickname: ?) Middle name: Jay
Rion (nickname: Ry) Middle name: Leo
I also like Klay

Girls names:
Aurora (nickname: rory) Middle name: beau
Koda (nickname: Ko) Middle name: Aims
Marley (nickname: Mars) Middle name: Jade

Rowan (Nickname: Rowe) Middle name: Atlas - Rowan ia very popular Rowan Atlas sounds a bit like Road Atlas
Arlo (nickname: ?) Middle name: Jay - Jay's a filler middle name. Arlo is very popular and likely to date
Rion (nickname: Ry) Middle name: Leo - Unique spelling of Ryan>
I also like Klay - as do the Rooneys

Girls names:
Aurora (nickname: rory) Middle name: beau - No to both
Koda (nickname: Ko) Middle name: Aims - Just no.
Marley (nickname: Mars) Middle name: Jade - quite downmarket. Mars rhymes with Arse.

I love baby names too op! I could talk about them all day and I'm not even pregnant! If I ever have another baby, be prepared to see me on this board every day Grin.

Rowan is having a bit of a moment. It does get shortened to Rowe usually. I like it. Atlas...is nice, but I don't like it with Rowan as it does sound a bit like road atlas or Rowan Atkinson.

Arlo is another trendy one which I really like. I don't like Jay. It does sound like filler / an initial. Arlo Jay Smith = Arlo J. Smith.

Rion shortened to Ry, so I'm guessing pronounced like Ryan? I don't like it. Don't like Ryan either, but Rion would be worse as a bit of a pain to have to spell out all the time. Leo is lovely and probably my favourite of all your names. I'd probably use that as a first name, maybe with Atlas as a middle name. Leo Atlas is nice I think.

Aurora is another one having a bit of a moment I think. I like it! I don't like Beau as a girls name, as I used to live in France and studied French at university, so I just find it jarring to use a masculine French word as a girl's name. That said, I've heard worse.

Koda is not great, sorry. Sounds like it is short for Dakota which is a name I don't like. I know an Aims, short for Aimee, which I quite like. Aimee as a first name?

Marley I don't like. Jade isn't to my taste either.

If you like surname names for girls though, how about Elliott, Blake or Riley?

Boys names:
Rowan - 4/10 - Rowan too trendy and popular for me these days and I prefer it as a girl name. It's shooting up the top 100 and Roman with M is the fastest rising boy name and will be top 30 soon. Roman, Rowan, Reuben, Rory all in my child's class. Gets a bit same-y.
Arlo - 5/10 - I like the sound of the name. It's another very trendy popular one though. Is popularity a factor for you? If so avoid Rowan and Arlo. Otto, Jago and Hugo are less used if you're interested.
Rion 8/10 could you spell it Ryan though - is that how it is pronounced? I like the meaning of the name and it's really underused these days. Would sound refreshing. About to leave the top 100 names, has been on a downward slope for 25 years.
Klay 8/10 - really unusual and different. You have quite a variety of names here. I quite like names that aren't really common so I'd pick Klay or Ryan.

Rion and Koda aren't names?

Rowan, Arlo, Aurora are all ok. I wouldn't overthink what the nicknames will be as that decision might be out of your hands (eg dh's sister is Caroline but has resolutely been Caz not Carrie as hoped since she was 12)

If you like Arlo then how about Ivo/Theo?

Namechanger0800 · 07/02/2021 18:00

The only one I like is Aurora

Arlo is ok

Not keen on any of the others at all

Happenchance · 07/02/2021 18:12

In my experience Koda is a male dog's name.

BiBabbles · 07/02/2021 18:17

I would pronounce Rion as Ree-on (like Dion, Marion, Zorion). I'm guessing with the nickname Ry that's not what you're thinking. If it's pronounced like Ryan, it'll likely be written like that a lot. Similar with Klay - Clay is fine.

I think Rowan is nice for either sex, but I agree that Rowan Atlas sounds like road atlas.

partyatthepalace · 07/02/2021 19:18

Rowan, Arlo and Aurora are all nice names, Rowan works for a girl also

The other names you have are all a bit made up and very down market, and won’t do your child any favours in life. Ditto for Jade and Aims as middle names. Beau is odd for a girl, the feminine would be Belle.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/02/2021 19:34

Rowan is lovely, if quite popular. The boys middle name choices are nice - I especially like Atlas, although it doesn't work that well with Rowan. Aurora is pretty, if also a bit popular too. Jade is also fine as a middle name.

Sorry, but your other choices seem either very trendy (Arlo, Marley, Klay, Beau on a girl) or sound made up (Koda, Rion, Aims) which makes them look a bit downmaket imo. Rowan Jay and Aurora Jade make a nice matching sibset though.

Chilldonaldchill · 07/02/2021 20:12

Rowan (Nickname: Rowe) Middle name: Atlas - Rowan is nice but increasingly popular. Atlas is a tough middle name unless you can guarantee them being pretty big and strong.
Arlo (nickname: ?) Middle name: Jay - Arlo is gorgeous and doesn't need a nickname. Jay is a naff middle name though - sounds like such a filler middle name. Arlo Rowan would be much nicer.
Rion (nickname: Ry) Middle name: Leo - even if it's spelt Rion it will still be said like Ryan so it is just Ryan with an annoying spelling. I think of that as an unpleasant name (every Ryan I have met, bar one, has been "tricky" so that puts me off). Leo is nice though.
Klay - not nice at all.

Girls names:
Aurora (nickname: rory) Middle name: beau - Aurora is nice enough. Beau always looks silly as a girl's name.
Koda (nickname: Ko) Middle name: Aims - Koda is horrid. It reminds me of a Kodak camera. Aims is not nice either - did you mean Amie?
Marley (nickname: Mars) Middle name: Jade - I loathe Marley and not keen on Jade - both seem very down-market.
However Aurora Jade is quite nice.

McEwan · 07/02/2021 20:23

Sorry, not my cup of tea at all

Bluesername · 07/02/2021 21:53

I'd mix up the names for some other combinations.

Rowan Atlas is OK. Rowan Arlo would work well, or Leo Jay.

Aurora Jade would be the nicest of the possible combinations from the girls names IMO.

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 07/02/2021 22:17

Truthfully, I think all of them are ghastly, in any combination. The worst are Koda Aims (Kids aims to do what? Plus, it'll be said 'Kodaraims' because of the double vowels) and Marley Jade. Both always have been hideous. As others have pointed out, Beau is masculine. Bo would be the feminine spelling.
It does slightly come across as you're trying to be a bit cool with the names and nicknames. Why not just use the names you want. I know a girl named Rori.
Rion to me looks like it should be pronounced Ree-on, not to rhyme with Brian as you suggest in the choice of Ry for nickname. Why not just use Ryan if you're planning on calling him Ry for a NN?
It's quite a mixed bag of names you have there!

Firebird83 · 08/02/2021 00:48

Rowan and Arlo are the only nice ones.

user1493494961 · 08/02/2021 01:08

Rowan, Arlo and Aurora are OK, the rest are awful.
